A recent statement released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) warned General Motors (GM) that they should be prepared to acknowledge that the death toll associated with their ignition switch defect is substantially higher than the figure, 13 people, that they insist is accurate.

The company has recalled more than 2.6 million vehicles this year in relation to an ignition switch defect that can result in a power shut-down that disables the power steering, brakes, and airbags. There is considerable evidence indicating that GM officials were aware of this issue for nearly a decade, yet they did nothing to protect the safety of consumers until several months ago.

Due to the defect, the occupant detection system for the airbags may be unable to tell if the person in the front passenger seat is an adult or child. As a result, it could deploy with too much force for a child, or not enough force for an adult. In either case, the person meant to be protected by the airbag may be injured.
