Study Reveals Over 80% of ‘DEEP WEB’ Visits Relate to Pedophilia

STUDY REVEALS OVER 80% OF ‘DEEP WEB’ TRAFFIC RELATES TO CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

A study conducted by the University of Portsmouth in the UK has revealed that over 80% of ‘deep web’ traffic is used for child pornography. With hundreds of illegal activities online such as drug trafficking, the results of the study are quite surprising in that the majority of traffic with hidden tracks is related to pedophile activities. Putting aside regular users with Tor and also automated botnet traffic, 83% of deep web traffic was directed through sites that contain one form or another of sexual abuse to children.

The study was conducted by researchers who place 40 computers onto the Tor network to serve as relay machines. Researchers then used web-crawling software to categorize over 40,000 services that made use of Tor’s hidden services (not to be confused with Tor’s network which puts a stop to websites from tracing your identity). After removing the data from automated activities that relate to malware and virus, the remaining data showed where traffic was going and the final outcome was presented at the Chaos Computer Congress in Hamburg, Germany.

The figures revealed were very unsettling, especially when compared to other deep web traffic results. For instance, the Silkroad site, which sells contraband, only made up a quarter of all hidden services. Child abuse sites made up only 2%. The results of the study may come as a blow to people who stand up for services like Tor when used legally.

Suggestions were made as to the actual interpretation of the results where the possibility exists that not all the traffic recorded was actually generated by a consumer. Some suggestions take on the possibility of traffic caused by law entities visiting those sites for investigative purposes. Other suggestions argue that some services are short lived on the deep web and so the study’s data may just be showing that abusive sites are much more persistent in showing up in the results.
