Altamira Oriole  Photo by Ashok Khosla
Source: ✿══  goo.gl/Ld1Cn7 ══ ✿
The Altamira oriole (Icterus gularis) is a New World oriole. The bird is widespread in subtropical lowlands of the Mexican Gulf Coast and northern Central America, the Pacific coast and inland. It also can be found in the extreme south of Texas (locally called the Rio Grande Valley).
At 25 cm (9.8 in) and 56 g (2.0 oz), this is the largest oriole of the Icterus genus. This bird nests in open woodlands. The nest is a very long woven pouch, attached to the end of a horizontal tree branch, sometimes to telephone wires.
This bird forages high in trees, sometimes in the undergrowth. They mainly eat insects and berries.
These birds are permanent residents, and unlike the migratory orioles that breed in the US, the species is sexually monomorphic—both the males and the females have elaborate coloration and patterning.

+Majestic & Beautiful  Hoopoe

The hoopoe /ˈhuːpuː/ (Upupa epops, "hudhud") is a colourful bird found across Afro-Eurasia, notable for its distinctive "crown" of feathers. It is the only extant species in the family Upupidae. One insular species, the Saint Helena hoopoe, is extinct, and the Madagascar subspecies of the hoopoe is sometimes elevated to a full species. Like the Latin name upupa, the English name is an onomatopoeic form which imitates the cry of the bird.

The hoopoe was classified in the clade Coraciiformes, which also includes kingfishers, bee-eaters, and rollers.[2] A close relationship between the hoopoe and the woodhoopoes is also supported by the shared and unique nature of their stapes.[3] In the Sibley-Ahlquist taxonomy, the hoopoe is separated from the Coraciiformes as a separate order, the Upupiformes. Some authorities place the woodhoopoes in the Upupiformes as well.[4] Now the consenus is that both hoopoe and the wood hoopoes, along with the hornbills are placed in Bucerotiformes.

Snowy Owls
Snowy Owls are very large owls with smoothly rounded heads and no ear tufts. The body is bulky, with dense feathering on the legs that makes the bird look wide at the base when sitting on the ground.
Snowy Owls are white birds with varying amounts of black or brown markings on the body and wings. On females this can be quite dense, giving the bird a salt-and-pepper look. Males tend to be paler and become whiter as they age. _The eyes are yellow._

Restore habitat, restore birds.
SOurce http://bit.ly/1RVk4Np
This year’s International Migratory Bird Day theme is habitat.

The Season of Celebrating Birds

Last week was for the birds – lucky me!

First, I had the pleasure of attending the Migratory Bird Conservation Commission Meeting where $58 million in funding was approved for the Service and our partners to protect critical wetlands through acquisition and easements, conserving more than 200,000 acres of wetland and associated upland habitats for waterfowl, shorebirds and other birds across North America. I also got to spend a morning birdwatching on Theodore Roosevelt Island in DC with many of our partners. A highlight of the morning was seeing a prothonotary warbler.

One of only two warbler species that nest in cavities, this warbler travels from Central and South America to breed and raise its young here in North America.  Using stop-over points to rest and refuel, the habitats we protect are important for their survival; in fact habitat is crucial for the survival of all birds.

Habitat loss and degradation are the largest threats to birds. Birds need to be able to have places that provide food, water, shelter, and raise their young.  This year’s International Migratory Bird Day theme is habitat – Restore Habitat, Restore Birds – and tells the story of the importance habitats play in the lives of birds. This year’s celebration of birds also focuses on the importance of preserving existing habitat, the threats to habitats, the elements of habitat on which birds depend, and how restoration of habitats benefits birds.

This year, thousands of people at more than 700 locations from Canada to Argentina will learn how restoring habitats can benefit migratory birds and us. Wetlands, for example, recharge surface and groundwater supplies while also providing crucial fish and wildlife habitat. When wetlands, which are vulnerable to agriculture uses, development, climate change and urbanization, are restored, the thriving bird populations often attract birdwatchers, an important sector in the ecotourism industry.

Birders spent nearly $41 billion in the United States in 2011, including about $15 billion on travel, according to the National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation. These expenditures created 666,000 jobs and $31 billion in employment income, according to the survey’s birding addendum.

In addition to educational presentations, bird walks, and creative art activities, many of these events will include habitat restoration activities like clean-ups and planting native species.

While International Migratory Bird day has an official ‘day’ - the second Saturday in May (May 9 in 2015) - any day can be a day of migratory bird celebration. International Migratory Bird Day can be celebrated whenever migratory bird arrival or departure happens in your community or whenever you feel like celebrating birds!

Join me in this annual celebration – get involved – help birds and find a place to celebrate help restore habitats and restore birds.

+Majestic & Beautiful *MANDARIN DUCK_

The mandarin duck (Aix galericulata), or just mandarin, is a perching duck species found in East Asia. It is medium-sized, at 41–49 cm (16–19 in) long with a 65–75 cm (26–30 in) wingspan. As the other member of the genus Aix, it is closely related to the North American wood duck.
The adult male is a striking and unmistakable bird. It has a red bill, large white crescent above the eye and reddish face and "whiskers". The breast is purple with two vertical white bars, and the flanks ruddy, with two orange "sails" at the back. The female is similar to female wood duck, with a white eye-ring and stripe running back from the eye, but is paler below, has a small white flank stripe, and a pale tip to its bill.
Both the males and females have crests, but the crest is more pronounced on the male. Mandarin ducklings are almost identical in appearance to wood ducklings, and very similar to mallard ducklings. The ducklings can be distinguished from mallard ducklings because the eye-stripe of mandarin ducklings (and wood ducklings) stops at the eye, while in mallard ducklings it reaches all the way to the bill.

+Majestic & Beautiful _PYGMY OWLS_
Pygmy owls are members of the genus Glaucidium. They belong to the typical owl family, Strigidae, one of the two generally accepted living families of owls. The genus consists of about 26 to 35 species distributed worldwide. The exact number of species is somewhat disputed.
These are mostly small owls, and some of the species are called "owlets". Most pygmy owl species are nocturnal and hunt mainly large insects and other small prey.Glaucidium forms a paraphyletic group with Surnia

Indonesian hawk eagle (nisaetus alboniger)
It is a diurnal bird of prey, it is reproduced in the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo. It is a bird of open woodland, although the island forms prefer a higher density of trees. Build a nest of twigs in a tree and lays a single egg.
