Love all these staircases, these are some of my favorite in the city. I lived just below the Freeman House for three years and remember how shocked I was when I discovered the Hollywood Bowl was open for stairwalking during the day. Also on Friday mornings you can watch the dress rehearsals for free!

I was walking up one of the fire roads or the driveways up to the uppermost parking area, and a maintenance worker stopped me and said, "There's nothing up there." I said, "Oh, I'm just taking a walk. I saw a hill and figured I'd walk up it." And he said, "If you really want to see something, go inside to the top of the seats..." That's how I figured out they'd let me in!

A writer, a gelato-eater, and a walker in LA.
Alissa Walker is a writer and event producer whose work focuses primarily in and on Los Angeles. She writes about design, architecture, cities, transportation and walking for many publications, including GOOD, Fast Company, Dwell, Details, Sunset, and LA Weekly, and is the associate producer for the KCRW public radio show “DnA: Design and Architecture” hosted by Frances Anderton. As the co-creator of GOOD Ideas for Cities, a collaboration between GOOD and the nonprofit CEOs for Cities, Alissa hosts events across the country where designers are assigned urban problems proposed by city leaders, and present their creative solutions at lively public forums. In addition to her writing, Alissa lectures widely on socially design, urbanism, transportation issues, and (her favorite topic) walking in LA. She is the founder of design east of La Brea (de LaB), a bimonthly event series and community of over 1000 local creatives focused on promoting, engaging and collaborating with the artists, designers, and architects working on the east side of Los Angeles. In 2010, Alissa was named as a USC/Annenberg Getty Arts Journalism Fellow for her writing and activism in design and urbanism. She lives in a royal blue house in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles, where she throws ice cream socials, tends to a drought-tolerant garden, rides a Creamsicle-colored Public bike, writes infrequently on her blog, Gelatobaby, and relishes life in L.A. without a car.
