I'm a personal injury attorney so I see a lot of situations where people are harmed by others. But last night's Bronx fire is one of the more bewildering stories. The FDNY is reporting the fire was caused by a 3-year-old child playing with a stove. This is devastating on so many levels. I expect to see the parent or guardian held accountable from all sides for not supervising the child. And that's what makes this such a painful situation. It's very complex. It only takes a second for something like this to happen. And so many lives and families irreversibly lost. #bronx #nyc #fire http://bit.ly/2C8WYW1

Do you walk by a place in a walkway or stairwell that's a danger to the neighborhood but no one does anything about it? We all see these situations so often that most people think it's their responsibility to avoid an accident. Not true! Slips and falls account for over 8 million ER visits every year. Over 2 million of those are caused by flooring issues. I'm working on my next blog post and it's about how to protect yourself if you've injured yourself in a slip and fall accident. Is it your fault or is someone else responsible? #slipandfall #bronx #nyc

This story from a teen detailing how NYPD cops tried to silence her after a rape is appalling. If I hadn't seen so many other crimes I'd say it was unbelievable. Unfortunately, it is not. #bronx #nyc #knowyourrights http://nyp.st/2zKYzjB

Things you do not want to see in the news. A sheriff telling evacuees during Hurricane Irma they will be checked for warrants before they can enter a shelter. (The sheriff is now being sued for violating constitutional rights.) I agree that evacuees need to be protected from predators, but this decision reflects a lack of compassion and a lack of respect for basic human needs.

It's hard to imagine the terror of being forced to escape your home and have nowhere to go due to fear of the police. I could see how this sheriff's mandate would scare even law-abiding citizens. Forgot a parking ticket? Overlooked a fine? Didn't get a legal notice in the mail? This guy was threatening to put people in jail during one of the most stressful and devastating times in their lives. I will definitely be watching this case. #KnowYourRights #HurricaneIrma #policebrutality #nyc

The NYPD is accused of "cyclist blaming" and using non-Vision-Zero tactics in handing out tickets. The Department denies singling out cyclists, but an advocacy group says more cyclists are being ticketed in these areas than the large vehicles that have recently killed cyclists.

One of the big issues is perception. When cyclists are getting more tickets in areas where there were recent injuries or deaths, it sends the message that the cyclists were to blame. In many cases they were not at fault.

What's the best way to protect cyclists from injury or death from commercial vehicles? Is the anger against NYPD for ticketing cyclists justified? This is a debate that's only going to continue to heat up. #bronx #brooklyn #queens #nyc

Very disturbing to put military tools in the hands of local police. When you're a hammer, everything looks like a nail. #civilrights #KnowYourRights #nyc #bronx #queens #brooklyn

I can't think of a better way to start the week than seeing that Cuomo has signed Briana's Law. 11-year-old Briana Ojeda died after her mother was stopped by NYPD as she was rushing the girl to the hospital during an asthma attack. The officer didn't know CPR, and delayed Briana from reaching the hospital in time to save her life. Now that this new legislation has been signed, officers must complete CPR certification and renew every two years. #bronx #nyc #brooklyn #queens #civilrights
