It was eleven months prior to the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the country was teetering on the brink of war when a million and a half people came together on January 1, 1941 to witness Pasadena’s 52nd annual Tournament of Roses. The Los Angeles Times reported that the essence of this parade lacked the whimsy and fantasy of previous celebrations; instead, a more tangible feeling of pride, unity and love of country prevailed. In keeping with the theme, “America in Flowers,” the floats, adorned in spectrums of delicate blossoms, portrayed the vibrant history of the nation with floral versions of “Stars and Stripes, Liberty Bells and the stalwart things that have given America her back bone.” The Ontario Chamber of Commerce’s contribution to this patriotic imagery was the float pictured here depicting General George Washington crossing the Delaware.
