Chore Charts!
Hello! It's been a while. Recently, we've started chore charts in the Simmons household and I wanted to post about it. We were sort of in a post-holiday slump and the boys were doing hardly anything except drifting from one play-activity to another, with an...

Space
The boys have been on a space kick recently, so I abandoned my neat list of two-week school units and all we've been doing is space, space, space. Rockets, planets, space shuttles, stars, moons, galaxies...whatever we can find and that they'll sit through. ...

Easter, not so much as Christmas but still a bit, tends to be a busy holiday-- running around for dinners, Easter Egg hunts, coloring eggs, eating massive amounts of candy. What are you doing to keep this holiday calm for your family? What are you doing to take time to really reflect on it, if you celebrate (as my family does) for religious reasons?

This year we've started a tradition of skipping the candy (our kids are young enough to not know any better) and opting for a family film to watch together as a gift, so we have to take time to sit down with a snack and watch. The only requirement beyond appropriate content was that it had to be a film my husband and I would genuinely enjoy as well. We went with Singing in the Rain, and Easter Day we'll probably relax after enjoying Easter Breakfast at church (yes, a place to go, but also, less work and dishes for me!).

I've been thinking more about parenting mantras since reading/listening to a lot about them here and around recently. I kept thinking, "I have to know a few of these..." but couldn't remember. Then yesterday, one flew out of my mouth-- I hadn't heard it in a few years despite it getting pretty much daily use in my childhood. My mom threw it at us, siblings said it to each other (we were only allowed to say it politely, of course!):

"Move your feet, lose your seat."

Ended all arguments about "saved" seats at game or dinner tables or in the car because someone had gotten up to "go do something." Exceptions to the rule included bathroom trips and following instructions from mom or dad. My two-year-olds are now at the point where I have to start saying it again. :)
