This weekend marks the 19th anniversary of the opening of Coors Field in Denver.  For the first two season the +Colorado Rockies were playing in Denver they did so at Mile High Stadium.  As Wrigley Field celebrated it’s 100th anniversary earlier this week it should be noted currently Coors Field is the 13th oldest stadium used in Major League Baseball.

The MLB season usually starts the first week of April, anyone know why the first game at Coors Field was on April 26, 1995?

This week spring is out in full force along the front range of Colorado leaving behind the snowfalls we had seen during March and April.  However prior to getting to this point we had a busy day with rain last week.  As the storms moved through the city I was photographing and this image was taken off my gallery neighbor Kelly Schurger‘s car after a storm had passed.  Taken with my phone, I processed the image in Instagram while waiting for the next band of rain to move through the city.

Summer will be soon upon us in full force and the Getaway Monday image for this week celebrates the summer months with an image from a pow wow in Western Montana.  While living in Montana one summer I had the opportunity to attend a pow wow and what stood out for me was the color and movement during the event.  Slowing the shutter speed down I worked to capture this movement as it tells the story of the event which people came to from not only the area but quite a distance as well.

March 2010 - A spring storm is not uncommon in Denver and as most people left work to get home prior to the bulk of the snow fall, I headed towards Union Station to photograph the accumulating wet snow. The challenge in this image was the wind as my camera faced in a northern direction. With the wind howling, the vertical snow would start to build up on the lens which forced me to turn the camera and clean it after an image or two was captured. After nearly an hour in the conditions I ended up calling it a night and left to head home and thaw out.

A single aircraft departs and begins an easterly turn on a cool December evening south of Denver International Airport. With some high clouds in the sky, the light from the airport illuminates the bottoms to provide contrast. This image is a 45 second exposure, from about four miles south of the airport. The solid white lines are the landing lights, while the dots on the path is the beacon light.

I was near the corner of Speer and Champa in the late afternoon take some pictures when a driver in a car at the red light started talking to me while he was waiting for the light to change. He mentioned the reflection of the city on the building a block back from the direction he was driving. As soon as he mentioned that I thought about it for a minute and knew what building he was talking about as I had noticed that scene before. I was heading back in that direction to my car and stopped at the building to photograph the reflections and skyline of Denver.

The Getaway Monday image for this week brings us to Vancouver, British Columbia which I visited a few years ago.  While there exploring the city I photographed some of the city and one thing which I found interest in was the roof line of Canada Place.  When first viewing the roof is reminded me of Denver International Airport however the lines at both are a little different.  This image was taken from a distance capturing just the roof of the building and the lines and patterns it creates on the Vancouver waterfront.

At the end of April I headed out to the plains to see how the growth was coming along for some future ideas for photographs.  During the scouting I came across some fields with fresh growth and those with contrasting color.  As I stood on the side of the road I worked with this concept and while moving the camera captured the fields before me. As I head back to this area in the summer it will be interesting to see how the fields change of the course of the growing season.

This past weekend after a Saturday snowstorm I headed to Sloans Lake in Denver to photograph at sunrise.  When I got to the lake in below freezing temperatures  the steam was rising from the lake.  Positioning myself for sunrise I wait to the morning light to pick up more of this steam with the City of Denver in the background from just west of downtown.

Ten days the largest snow storm of the season to date hit the Denver metro area and with the fresh snow I headed out to photograph around the city.  As I mentioned last week one location I have been meaning to visit during a significant snow event in Denver has been City Park.  On the east side of the park there is a marker along one of the trails which indicates 5280.  As I walked through the area I made an attempt to find this in six inches of fresh snow on the ground and more falling each minute.  It took me a little while to find the trail and by remembering a tree in the area from a prior photograph of the marker was able to find this location under the snow.
