Thanks Darrin and Ali. I think we shall have to find some wonderfully flowery, full skirts perfect for swirling in to wear with our headbands!

Because illustration features so heavily in what I write about on the blog, I've been
thinking about the possibility of hosting a Big Draw event (http://www.campaignfordrawing.org/bigdraw/) on my blog but I'd like to chat about the idea with some friendly faces to firm up
ideas and explore options etc to see if this is something feasible for me.

My rough idea at the moment would be to host an online competition for
grownups and their kids to draw together to illustrate a scene from their
favourite unillustrated book.

Generations would submit a drawing and then I
would ask some of the illustrators I have links with to "judge

I'd try to get an art material company to donate some materials as a prize (or
perhaps sketches from judging illustrators as prizes).

What pitfalls do people foresee? What issues might arise? What do you think I should think about in hosting such a competition? What would make you participate in such a competition?

I'd like the event to encourage adults as well as children to draw. Do you think it would be better if adult/kid pairs did one drawing together, or two drawings separately?

If I created an online gallery eg using Flickr, what advice to you have for setting up one?

What restrictions should I place on the artwork submitted eg format, materials, size etc

Any suggestions for sponsor companies?

I'd really appreciate any thoughts, suggestions, warnings you have - if I do this, I want it to work well!

Looking forward to hearing your ideas :-)
THE BIG DRAW. Launched as a one-day event in 2000, The Big Draw is now an annual month-long festival of over one thousand events across the UK. Every October, museums, galleries, heritage sites, libra...

Hi Zoe, ok having a quick look you would need to sign up to flick, very easy to do. I wasn't sure exactly what you were planning but my thoughts would be
- asking entrants to upload their entries online
In this case you could use Flickr or Picassa (google owned), what I'd suggest is create a group & ask people to upload to that group. You could do a group per age category alternatively the photos could just be tagged with the age category. Here are some guidelines i found online that might help
http://textilem.server308.com/green/instructions-for-how-to-enter-flickr-contest/
http://www.theherbert.org/resources/files/FlickrTandC2.pdf

I have noticed other competition which use blogging services such as Tumblr, here you can set up a specific blog for the competition & just ask folk to email their pictures with key info ie name, age etc.
Example of a nail art comp - http://chouzuru.blogspot.com/2011/04/mlds-spring-nail-art-contest.html

- uploading entries or winners
You could stick to old skool & let entrants mail you their creations & then you could photograph the entries & add to your blog, or create a flickr group etc.

I dont know if you use Wordpress for your blog, but if you do you can get Plugins to create a gallery on your blog

Hope this is helpful

We've been growing sunflowers! The pic with the bee is our tallest as part of the official Sunflower Challenge. The other photo gives you an idea of the sunflower sea we're cultivating!

Yes, brill for bees and all sorts of insects, to say nothing of squirrels and birds - that's why we're growing so many! As well as for the fact that they just make us feel happier to look at them!
