HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR DOOR LOCKS

Home locks are an integral part of any door, since they are the points of entry and exit. It acts as the first line of defense against external threats. Therefore, it is important to give proper attention and take every possible step in making your door safe and secure. As with anything mechanical, grime, and dirt will build up in a door lock, making it harder to operate. Regular door lock maintenance does not only help locks to function optimally, but also assures that the property is satisfactorily secured.

Regular Lubrication and Cleaning

Since door locks are composed of moving parts, dirt may clog on these tight spaces making it harder to operate. To prevent this from happening, apply a lock lubricant and use a soft and clean paper towel or cloth. This lubricant comes with a spray that oils the lock sufficiently for a smoother operation. Contrary to what most people suggest, do not use powder graphite since it clogs like sand, making it harder to remove.

Do you know how to keep your keys safe and how to deal with lock problems?

1. Rekey or change the front door lock after an in-home helper leaves

Even if the person returns the key to your house, it is always better to be safe than sorry. With rekeying, none of the old keys will work for unlocking the door. You will receive a set of new ones. If the lock is outdated or worn, however, the best solution will be to replace it with a better one.

2. Unsticking a Frozen Lock

If the door lock to your home this winter becomes iced over, remove the ice from the key opening and carefully heat the key with a lighter or match. Then hold the key with gloves and insert it into the lock and work it gently back and forth until the cylinder turns. If the key still doesn't turn, call our professional locksmiths and we can get your lock working perfectly using the right tools and expertise without doing any damage.
