Jan 17.  Kid's invention day.

When I was a kid, my friend Varun and I invented a virtual leash consisting of a radio transmitter and a corresponding receiver with a countdown.  The system would sound an alarm, for example, if a child and her parents were separated by more than a few feet.

We sketched the idea, wrote an essay/short story for it, and even built it with spare parts we got from You Do It! Electronics over in Needham, MA just off 128.  We submitted our application to the Duracell invention contest, which was popular for teens in the late 90s.

Our invention didn't win - what won that year was a large thermometer that you could mount outside your window with bright LEDs "Thermometer for the Blind."

Years later, when I was in college, I saw that Duracell had released our exact product as their own and made a profit from it.  I don't know how much they made, but they probably made more than we did on the idea.  I found the article in a Chinese newspaper and died somewhere that day.
