A New Year for Women
Our CEO, Heather Nancarrow, attended today's A New Year for Women Summit in Sydney, which tackles gender-based economic inequality. The event was hosted by the NSW Council of Social Service (NCOSS). Heather is featured below with NCOSS's CEO Tracy Howe.

Distinguished speakers and guests included 100 leaders from across policy, business, and the community sector, such as NSW Minister for women Pru Goward; NSW Shadow Minister for Women, Ageing, Disability Services and Multiculturalism, Sophie Cotsis; and Associate Editor for Mamamia, Georgina Dent.

The four key areas discussed at the Summit are known to also affect other forms of gender inequality and exacerbate the effects of gender violence:
* Financial literacy
* Representation of women in work
* Housing
* Superannuation.

During her talk, Howe noted that women bear the greatest level of economic insecurity; as such, women's economic empowerment is central to achieving gender equality.

The accompanying NCOSS report shows that gender inequality "transcends state and national boundaries":

"And while it may manifest differently in diverse cultures and communities, gender inequity derives from the same root cause: valuing women and girls less than boys and men. We can end this. We must end this."
