Nyepi Background
Nyepi translates as Day of Stillness and Seclusion - it is ultimately the quietest day of the year, all folks here obey the set of local rules that brings all routine activities to a complete halt. Our roads are void of any traffic and nobody steps outside of his or her home premises. The peaceful stillness of Nyepi is a must to be experienced at least once in a lifetime, especially since the preceding and following days are full of highlights! The Day of Silence is packed into Hindu rituals and festivities! All center around Puri Mango Hotel…….

Before ‘the stillness’ commences, amazing purification rituals with colorful processions known as the Melasti are hold starting three days prior to Nyepi, On Thursday March 19, the locals carry their beautifully manufactured icons from various village temples in Sanur in long parades towards the Beach where elaborate purification ceremonies take place on Sanur Beach - you just take a short stroll to the Beach and take part in it! It is an astonishing cultural vision not be missed. It is one of the best times to capture on camera the iconic Balinese processions in motion, as parasols, banners and small effigies offer a cultural spectacle.

Puri Mango Hotel is located besides the local neighborhood hall of Sindhu or Banjar Sindhu. Sindhu celebrates its purification ceremony on March 20th as an exception – so you just can join in the procession to the Beach and have a drink at Mango Beach Bar and Restaurant and watch the ceremony which is hold in the temple beside Mango Beach Bar and Restaurant.

March 20th is Saka New Year’s Eve is all high-pitched noise and cheerfulness. Every Balinese household starts the evening with blessings at the family temple and continues with a ritual called the pengrupukan where each member participates in ‘chasing away’ malevolent forces, known as bhuta kala, from their compounds – hitting pots and pans or any other loud instruments along with a fiery bamboo torch.

These ‘spirits’ are later manifested as the papier-mâché effigies called ogoh-ogoh to be paraded in the streets. They were built throughout the weeks leading up to the Saka New Year. Youth groups design and build their mythical figures with intricately shaped and tied bamboo framework before many layers of artwork. They are displayed throughout Sanur – so just have a ride and check on them as everyone else. After seeing the ogoh-ogohs, you may have a BBQ dinner and a few drinks at Mango Street café in our Hotel and wait for the people of Banjar Sindhu to depart to the main road between 7pm and 9pm – just follow and intermingle with a cheerful mass of locals, expats, tourist at all ages that watch the ogoh-ogoh parade here at the crossroads in Sanur – you can also see the parade in Mertasari or Denpasar.

On March 201, complete calm enshrouds you as we follow the Catur Brata Penyepian, roughly the ‘Four Nyepi Prohibitions’. These include amati geni or ‘no fire’, amati lelungan or ‘no travel’, amati karya ‘no activity’, and amati lelanguan ‘no entertainment’. Some regard it as a time for total relaxation and contemplation, for others, a chance for Mother Nature to ‘reboot’ herself after 364 days of human pestering. A few flee their homes to Hotels or the neighboring islands. No lights are turned on at night – total darkness and seclusion goes along with this new moon island-wide, from 06:00 to 06:00. No motor vehicles whatsoever are allowed on the streets, except ambulances and police patrols. Community watch patrols or pecalang enforce the rules of Nyepi, patrolling the streets by day and night in shifts.

As our guest, you are confined to our hotel premises, but free to continue to enjoy the hotel facilities as usual.  We offer you from 8 am - 9 am Breakfast, from 12 pm - 12.30 pm Lunch and from 5pm – 6pm Dinner –Mango Street Restaurant closes at 6.30 due to local regulations, but you may have water and sit inside with a candle. So, don’t forget to get yourself candles and a lot of water.
