PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY’S BIGGEST MODIFIED RACE OF YEAR SATURDAY!

(Perris, CA, September 6, 2016) Perris Auto Speedway will host its biggest Modified race of 2016 this Saturday night, September 10th, when it will pay $1,500.00 to the winner of the 30-lap main event.  In addition to the Modifieds, the PASSCAR Street Stocks, Super Stocks, American Factory Stocks and the CDCRA Dwarf Cars will also be in action.  Spectator gates will open at 5:00 PM with racing at 7:00.

In addition to the winner’s share of the modified purse, second place will take home $750.00 and third will pocket $500.00.  The full purse and the race format can be viewed at the following link:  http://bit.ly/2c52OH1

The IMCA Super Nationals are going on this week in Boone, Iowa.  Therefore, there are no IMCA points being awarded this weekend anywhere in the nation and many IMCA tracks are taking the weekend off.  This allows drivers, who normally run for points at their home tracks, a chance to visit the famous Riverside County half-mile and to run for some extra money and test their skill level against the PAS regulars.  The race is unsanctioned, but it is run under the same IMCA rules as every IMCA sanctioned track.

Regular PAS Modified driver Steve Fangmeyer of Lake Elsinore approached promoter Don Kazarian with the idea of the expanded purse a few weeks ago.  Fangmeyer added some money to the purse and Kazarian did as well.

“Fans are going to see drivers they seldom have a chance to see at Perris,” Fangmeyer said.  “We have guys coming from the Bullhead City area, a bunch from Phoenix, Bakersfield and Santa Maria.  We are even expecting some guys from as far north as Salinas and Watsonville.  It is a long drive for all of them so the shot at racing for extra money is a good draw.”

In addition to the extra money up for grabs, extra laps have been added in both the modified heat races and the main event.  Saturday’s modified heats will be expanded from six to 10 laps and the main will increase from 20 laps to 30.  While The PAS/IMCA championship has already been decided for 2016 and Yucaipa’s Chuck Becker has been crowned champion, Saturday’s race will pay points for the 2016 track only modified points title.

Saturday’s races in the PASSCAR Street Stock, Super Stock and American Factory Stock classes will offer competitors their final chance of posting a win to get into the PAS Pursuit Finale Championship on October 29th.  Riverside residents Luke Dodd and Curtis Dietzsch, along with Blaine Whitson of Temecula, are the only drivers qualified thus far in the street stocks.  In the super stocks, Billy Griffin of Buena Park and Mike Lerwell of El Cajon are the only winners and thus are the only cars currently qualified for the season closer.  Todd Fassler of El Cajon, Alyssa Smith of Norco and James Altman Jr. of Lake Elsinore are the drivers currently qualified in the Factory Stocks.  Each class will have seven drivers in the Pursuit Finale.  Drivers who post wins during the regular season automatically qualify and the remainder of the “Super Seven” will be made up of the top drivers in points who have not won in 2016.

The CDCRA Dwarf Cars will be on hand for their next to last appearance of 2016 as well.

Adult tickets are $15.00.  Active military with proper id, teens 13-18 with their school id and kids 12 and under are $5.00.  Children 5 and under are free.  Parking on the fairgrounds is $8.00.  Individual tickets for all 2016 shows are available by calling 1-800-595-4849 or online at http://bit.ly/2caLuDl

Gardner, who won his first main event of 2016 and took over the USAC/CRA Series point lead at The PAS last Saturday night, won the prestigious race for the first time in 2009 and backed that up with another win in 2011.  At the significant November race, the Concord resident will be wheeling the Mark Alexander owned silver #4 that he has steered to the last three USAC/CRA titles in a row.

FINAL 2016 NIGHT OF DESTRUCTION AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY SATURDAY!

(Perris, CA, August 30, 2016) This Saturday night, September 3rd, will be the final time in 2016 for fans to see the immensely popular “Night of Destruction” at Perris Auto Speedway.  The sixth and final round of the year will feature Figure 8 Racing, a Figure 8 Trailer Race, Democross and Spectator Races.  Spectator gates will open at 5:00 PM.  There will be an on track autograph and photo session from 5:15 to 6:00 and racing will commence at 7:00.

Championships will be decided in two of the classes - Figure 8 and Figure 8 Trailer Race - on Saturday.  After Saturday, the Democross class will have races on September 17 and 18th at the Dabolition Derby and at the Southern California Fair on October 7th.  The Democross and overall Night of Destruction Champions will not be determined until after those events.

“We hope to see all of the Night of Destruction fans in the stands on Saturday,” promoter Don Kazarian said.  “This will be their final chance to see the full show until March of 2017.  It just keeps growing and growing.  So far the drivers have put in their best year yet and we expect Saturday to be a great finale.”

Menifee’s Ken McWilliams has a shot at winning both the Figure Trailer Race and the Figure 8 title.  The veteran racer is undefeated in the Figure 8 Trailer Races this year having won the first five main events of 2016.  He thus holds a commanding 48-point lead over second place David Holmes of Norco.  Barring complete disaster, McWilliams has the title locked up.

Things are much tighter in the Figure 8 class where Norco’s Klint Keenan sits on top of the heap, but four other drivers are within striking distance of the top spot heading into Saturday’s last race of the year.  McWilliams is second and is a mere 15-points behind.  Rob Multhaupt of Orange, Norco’s Earl Cox and Ronald Davis of Norwalk are all tied for third place.  They are just 18-points behind the leader, which is well within their reach on the night.

In the Democross class, Holmes carries a slender 6-point lead over retired airline pilot J.D. Wilson of Costa Mesa.  Wilson would have been the leader, but he missed one race earlier in the year due to a concussion.  Ryan Welfie of Fallbrook is third and is 15 points out of the top spot.

Holmes is 57-points ahead of McWilliams in the battle for the overall “Night of Destruction” championship for 2016. Multhaupt is third, but is nearly 300-points in back of the leader.

Spectator racing, matching two street legal cars on the track at a time, will also be a part of Saturday’s show.

In addition to this Saturday’s racing, kids and adults alike will be treated to the “Pick Your Part Inferno Jet Truck.”  Known as “The World’s Fastest Jet Dully,” driver Bob Vance will hit the track for a great show at intermission.

Adult tickets for Saturday’s show are $15.00.  Active military with proper id, teens 13-18 with their school id and kids 6-12 are just $5.00.  Children 5 and under are free.  Fairgrounds parking is $8.00. Individual tickets for all 2016 shows are available by calling 1-800-595-4849 or online at http://pas.tix.com/Schedule.aspx?OrgNum=7.   For fans who do not want to purchase tickets in advance, there will be plenty of tickets for everyone at the front gate on Saturday.

EXTRA MONEY INCLUDING $2,000.00 SPRINT CAR TROPHY DASH AT PERRIS SATURDAY!

(Perris, CA, August 23, 2016) When the USAC/CRA Amsoil Sprint Cars return to Perris Auto Speedway this Saturday night, August 27th, for the annual “California Racer’s Hall of Fame Night,” they will have a lot of extra reasons to run hard all evening long.  As this piece went to press, they had exactly $6,200.00 in extra reasons to run hard for.  Joining USAC/CRA on the all open wheel program will be the PAS Senior and Young Gun Sprints.  The beautiful vintage cars of the Western Racing Association will also be on hand.  Spectator gates will open at 5:00 PM and the first race will be at 7:00.

The extra money will start flying in qualifying.  Every year since the passing of Billy Wilkerson, his wife Anne has put up $500.00 to honor the two-time CRA champion and National Sprint Car Hall of Famer.  The award is called the “Billy Wilkerson Fast Time Award,” and it will go to the fastest qualifier on Saturday night.  In addition, the fast qualifier will also get another $100.00 from the Woodland Auto Display in Paso Robles, California netting the quick timer $600.00.

The “Junior Kurtz Trophy Dash” will honor the longtime Silver Crown car owner and hardcore race supporter who passed away in March of this year.  It will carry a purse of $2,000.00 and will be run speedway motorcycle style.  The four fastest qualifiers who accept the challenge to compete in the dash will contest four separate, three-lap races.  Each driver will start off each starting position one-time.  The winner of each segment will collect three-points, second-place will get two, third spot will pick up a single point and last will get zero.  At the end of the fourth segment, the points will be added up and the driver with the highest total will collect the lion’s share of the $2,000.00.  In case of a tie for first, there will be a special runoff between the tied drivers.

Moving onto the main event, longtime PAS infield announcer Chris Holt has thus far collected $3,700.00 in lap money.  The leader of each lap will collect a minimum of $100.00.  If there is more than $100.00 donated on certain laps, the leader will pocket that as well.  In addition, there will be a “Hard Luck Award” and Professional Racers Emporium will be donating fuel certificates to four selected teams.

The PAS Senior Sprint Car class will also have something extra to race for on Saturday.  Normally a trophy only class for drivers 45-years-of-age and older, 16-year old sprint car videographer Sean Conrad has raised a $700.00 payout for them on Saturday.

“All of the extra money is on top of the regular purse,” promoter Don Kazarian said.  “It is going to make it even more exciting all night as these guys are going to drive hard from their first lap of qualifying until the final lap of the main event trying to get a piece of the extra money.  Thank you for everyone who donated and thank you to Chris Holt and Sean Conrad for the hard work.  The drivers and the fans really appreciate it.”

The racing in the USAC/CRA Series has been fabulous thus far in 2016.  Saturday will be the ninth race of the year.  The first eight races have produced eight different winners!  Not among those eight winners are the two winningest drivers in series history, Damion Gardner of Concord and Mike Spencer of Temecula.  If that is not enough, the points battle is as tight as it has ever been this time of the year.  Visalia’s Richard Vander Weerd, who was born in Upland and who grew up in Chino, holds a slender six-point lead over Anaheim’s Jake Swanson and a seven-point advantage over Gardner.  First through sixth is only separated by 62-points.

Adult tickets are $25.00.  Seniors 65 and older get in for $20.00.  Active military members with proper id, teens 13-18 with their school id and kids 6-12 get in for just $5.00.  Children 5 and under are admitted free.  The event will not sell out and there will be plenty of tickets available for everyone at the ticket window on Saturday.

For patrons who wish to purchase tickets in advance, they can do so 24-hours a day by clicking on the following link http://bit.ly/2bzRg2x or by calling 1-800-595-4849.

Camping is available for $25.00 per night for all PAS events.  The campground opens at noon the day before each event.  Tailgating in the spectator parking lot will begin at 1:00 PM.

IMCA MODIFIEDS HEAD SATURDAY RACE PROGRAM AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY!
(Perris, CA, August 16, 2016) After two weeks off, racing returns to Perris Auto Speedway this Saturday night, August 20th, to begin a very busy final three months of the 2016 season. Saturday’s racing menu will give the fans a lot of bang for their bucks as it will feature the PASSCAR Super Stocks, Street Stocks, American Factory Stocks, IMCA Modifieds and the CDCRA Dwarf Cars. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 PM and racing will get the green flag at 7:00.
What is fast becoming a fan favorite at the track, which is hosting racing for the 21st season in 2016, is the IMCA Modified class. For years the track hosted its own modified series under the PASSCAR banner. However, for 2015 promoter Don Kazarian took the advice of several drivers and went back to having IMCA sanction that division. The move has paid off with bigger fields and a lot more visiting drivers.
The last time the IMCA Modifieds raced at The PAS on July 16th, 25 cars showed up for that class alone. On that night, four other tracks in Southern California had them on the schedule as well. This Saturday, night two of those four tracks are dark and one of the others does not have them on the schedule.
“We had our biggest Modified field in years on July 26th,” promoter Kazarian said. “We had some great visiting cars from other parts of California as well as Arizona. The racing was superb. This week three of the four tracks in So Cal that ran them last time are not running them or they are not open this week and all of the Arizona tracks are dark as well. We hope to have even more modifieds on hand this time. Drivers from the tracks not running the IMCA Mods this week may be on hand to earn some regional and state points as those standings close on September 25th. On top of everything else, the weather looks great. It is supposed to be about 12 or 13 degrees cooler than it has been in the first part of the week.”
Yucaipa veteran Chuck Becker continues to sit on top of the IMCA point heap at The PAS, but to say the fight for the top spot is tight is the understatement of the year. Justin Miller of Las Vegas is only one-point behind Becker heading into Saturday’s race. Dale Underwood of Wildomar is 10-points behind Becker in third with Riverside’s J.R. Stout fourth and only 13-points out of the top spot. Lomita veteran Mike Kirby, who has two wins and one second in three appearances at The PAS this year, is fifth and is 16-points in back of Becker.
Riverside’s Luke Dodd, Billy Griffin of Buena Park and James Altman Jr. of Lake Elsinore lead the point standings and all have qualified for the season ending PAS Pursuit Championship in the street stocks, super stocks and the factory stocks. Dodd has a meager three-point lead over Temecula’s Blaine Whitson in the street stocks, but that is one more point than what Altman lead’s El Cajon Todd Fassler by in the factory stocks. On the flip side of the coin, Griffin, who has three wins and a second in the four super stock races in 2016, has a bulging 28-point advantage over El Cajon’s Mike Lerwell in the standings.
The CDCRA Dwarf Cars, which are scaled down versions of 1930’s cars, will be making only their second appearance of the year at The PAS. However, they will be a regular part of all PASSCAR shows for the remainder of the year.
Saturday’s program will include heat races, A mains and if applicable, B mains on Saturday night. In addition to the racing, there will be a dance contest for the kids at intermission. All the drivers in Saturday’s last race will stop on the front straightaway and the fans will be let onto the track to meet the drivers, get autographs and take photos.
Adult tickets for Saturday’s show are $15.00. Active military with proper id, teens 13-18 with their school id and kids 6-12 are just $5.00. Children 5 and under are free. There will be plenty of tickets for everyone at the ticket window on Saturday. The race will not sell out. PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY PROMOTER REMEMBERS BRYAN CLAUSON!

(Perris, CA, August 11, 2016) Saddened by the death of Bryan Clauson, Perris Auto Speedway promoter Don Kazarian reflected on the superstar racer on Wednesday afternoon.

“First and foremost, everyone at Perris Auto Speedway sends their prayers and condolences to Bryan’s fiancé, family and all of his friends,” Kazarian said.  “Bryan Clauson was the perfect race car driver.  He was a dedicated champion who could drive and win in anything he ever sat in.  Anything!  However, he excelled at more than just winning races.  He was a true ambassador for the sport.  He had time for everyone.  Whether it be fellow competitors, officials or the fans.  No matter what the situation, he had a friendly smile and good word for everyone.  Especially the children.  He loved them and they loved him back.”

Kazarian continued.

“He was so easy to deal with.  Whenever we needed him for a press release or an interview, we would send a text or call him and he would respond instantly.  His response was pretty much always the same. ‘Whatever you guys want and whenever you need it.’  Probably the only time you could not get him was when he was in a racecar.”

Over the years Clauson won a total six times at The PAS.  The first victory came at the Glenn Howard Classic on November 2nd, 2009.  The last time he won on the Riverside County half-mile was at the 2016 season opener on March 5th.

His biggest win at The PAS came at last year’s Oval Nationals.  His perseverance just to start the Saturday night main event was as memorable as the actual race itself.

“He blew an engine late in the main on Friday night and they did not have another with them,” Kazarian said.  “His friend and sometimes car owner Mike Martin had an engine he could use.  The only problem was it was located in Phoenix, Arizona.  Many drivers would have called it quits at that point or they would have sent somebody else to go pick the engine up.  Not Bryan Clauson!  He got in a truck and drove over night to Phoenix.  He picked up the engine and turned right around and drove straight back to Perris.  He then went on to win the main event.  In the 21-year history of Perris Auto Speedway, nobody deserved to win a main event more than that.  He earned it in more ways than one and I will never forget that.”

Persons interested in donating to Bryan’s fund may direct their contributions to the USAC Benevolent Fund website at:  http://usacbf.org/cash-donation/

Donations to his fund may also be made by check.  Please make the check out to “USAC Benevolent Fund” and mail to:

VICTORVILLE’S JEFF DYER TO STEP FROM SPRINT CAR TO CHP CRUISER!

(Perris, CA, July 25, 2016) When the Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Cars return to Perris Auto Speedway this Saturday night, July 30th, veteran California Lightning Sprint Car Series driver Jeff Dyer will be taking his second ever ride in a 410 sprint car.  However, next month the Victorville resident, who retired from the United States Army in May, will be switching from a race car to a police cruiser as he begins training at the California Highway Patrol Academy in Sacramento.

Dyer started life in Covina before the family moved to Victorville when he was in the third grade. They then headed to Chino for his high school years.  He stayed in Chino until joining the Army in 2003.  While growing up he played ice hockey and has raced go karts as an adult, but he always wanted to be a member of the California Highway Patrol.  Now the first step in that dream is just a few weeks away.

“Ever since I was a little kid, I always wanted to be Highway Patrolman,” he smiled.  “That is one of the reasons I got out (of the Army).  They have an age limit to join the Highway Patrol and it is 34-years-old.  I am 33.  So, it was either I did it now or I did not do it.  I went through the process and was accepted and I start the academy in about four weeks.”

After Saturday’s action at The PAS, Dyer will get in a race with the California Lightning Sprint Cars at Ventura on August 3rd before leaving for the academy.  It is a live in academy so it is going to put a damper on his racing for the remainder of the year.  The academy is 27 weeks in length and racing in 2017 will depend on what schedule he gets.

While he is going to fulfill his lifelong dream, leaving the Army was not easy.

“It was kind of bittersweet getting out and very emotional,” he said.  “It was hard to say good-bye.  I loved the Army and I loved serving my country.  Officially I was in the Army for 12 years and about 8 months.  I was in college and a good friend of mine got killed overseas.  So, I wanted to do my part.  I walked straight out of college and into the recruiting station.  I actually started my Army career as a cavalry scout.  I did that for about three years total and did a couple of deployments doing that in Iraq.  My second time in Iraq, these IED’s (improvised explosive devices) were killing everybody.”

Dyer tore his ACL playing rugby and was assigned to desk duty which bored him to death.  He figured there was something else for him in the Army so he started hunting around the internet and he came across the EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal)  information.  It sparked his interest that you could be stationed anywhere in the country including “cool places like San Diego” so he sent an E-mail.

“I thought that would be awesome to be stationed in San Diego while in the Army,” he laughed.  “So I went through the whole long process.  It is a volunteer process.  It is the only job in the Army that you can quit anytime you wanted to.  They don’t want you there if you don’t want to do it.”

He went to school for the new position and graduated top of his class.  Fifty-five people started that class and only five graduated!

“When I graduated I was sent to Fort Lewis in Washington and was immediately deployed to Iraq,” he stated.  “I went there as a team leader.  We were there for about seven months and in those seven months me and my team disabled about 100 IED’s.  I think we destroyed about 10,000 pounds of captured enemy munitions.”

Dyer loved the job!  When he got back from Iraq, Afghanistan was “gearing up big,” so he volunteered to go.

“I did another year over there (Afghanistan) and I think we did between 300 and 500 missions.” Dyer remembered.  “We blew up about 60 tons of enemy munitions.  It is a unique job in the military.  It is one of the only jobs in the military where the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force go to the same school. It is a very dangerous job as you only get one chance.  People asked me if I was good at my job and I would joke and say, ‘well, I am still here.’”

Dyer is no newcomer when it comes to the sprint car game.  His step dad John Nelson owned a sprint car along with John Anderson that they ran from the mid 1980’s to the early 90’s.  Nelson drove the car for a bit and then had hired guns behind the wheel including Keith Chrisco, Frank Baldozier and Gary Howard.  As a teen, Dyer helped on that car.

Dyer will be racing the Cal Smith owned #39 this Saturday night.  That relationship goes back to when he was in high school and he was helping as much as he could as a part of Smith’s pit crew.

Unlike many in racing, Dyer has never had a dream of driving in NASCAR or at Indianapolis.  All he has ever daydreamed of racing is a 410 sprint car.  Saturday will be his second voyage in such a ride and perhaps there will be more in the future.

“The only thing I have ever wanted to race is a 410 sprint car,” the future officer grinned.  “I have been in love with them since I was a kid.  When I started racing, 410 sprint cars were my aspiration.  If I made it (into a 410) to that, it would be the highlight of my life and I could retire from racing and be satisfied.”

In his first outing in a 410 sprint car at Perris on June 11th, Dyer impressed many longtime fans by keeping his nose clean and finishing 14th in the 22 car main event.  Most recently, he won the last California Lightning Sprint Car main event at Ventura on July 9th.  It was his first CLS win of the year.  He is currently in fourth place in the CLS championship point standings.

In addition to Dyer and the Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Cars, the PAS Senior and Young Gun Sprint Cars will also be in action on Saturday.  Spectator gates will open at 5:00 PM and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00.

Adult tickets are $25.00.  Seniors 65 and older get in for $20.00.  Active military members with proper id, teens 13-18 with their school id and kids 6-12 get in for just $5.00.  Children 5 and under are admitted free.  City of Perris residents can get into this race for only $5.00 by showing a valid driver’s license or a utility bill from Perris with and id.  The event will not sell out and there will be plenty of tickets available for everyone at the ticket window on Saturday.

For patrons who wish to purchase tickets in advance, they can do so 24-hours a day by clicking on the following link http://pas.tix.com/Schedule.aspx?OrgNum=7 or by calling 1-800-595-4849.
