About
St Mary's Church of Ireland's posts

Post is pinned.
This church is on (or near) the site of the earliest churches serving Killarney and its townlands.  The current building was erected in 1870 to replace an older one.

It is particularly known for its stained glass windows; most of which come from a single studio—William Wailes; Newcastle-upon-Tyne between 1865-1885—and form a coherent series.  One window of importance is that showing a replica of Holman Hunt's "The Light of the World".  There is a modern window in the South Transept in memoriam.

The church is beautifully decorated with stencilled work and with sacred texts emblazoned in gothic script.

There are notable monumental plaques to the Herbert family who once owned much of the area and were patrons of the church.  A notable funerary urn on a pedestal on the north wall of the Nave is dedicated to the memory of the grandfather of Ireland's first President.

There is much to see, a place to light a candle in memory of a loved one or as a prayer, and space for quiet.

God is to be found in every place and every time; but it is especially easy to find God inside a Church.  The Church is situated between the Hotel quarter and the centre of town.

For those seeking the Roman Catholic Cathedral (which is also dedicated to St Mary the Virgin); you need to go to the far side of town.

When you're planning your trip to Kerry do pop over to Killarney (we've got more hotel beds than the whole of Northern Ireland!!; in the Republic, second only to Dublin) and stay awhile to visit the National Park and Muckross House.  And whilst you're here pop into our lovely Church and see why we're so keen for you to be here.

Enquiries can be emailed to enquiries@churchofthesloes.ie.
Concert Tour Operators should email concerts@churchofthesloes.ie

"gach beannacht" (which is Irish for "every blessing")
