Memory of the fall - Red leaves
Living in NY is pretty awesome.  Occasionally (read: in the summer) the 200% humidity tries to make the experience a little less fun.

This is a picture from last fall in Westchester, NY.

Astoria Glow
Recently someone asked me how I know that I am done processing a picture.  Since I never received any sort of classical training, I decide based on the following:
+  The free and very honest feedback of my wife
+  Whether or not I see any obvious imperfections in the picture that I can and want to fix
+  The transition between the original and final versions
The last of these is in part why I post transitions.  Another aspect of that is offering a full visual disclosure of how the image changed.

Thoughts?

Just had my first sighting of google glass in the wild (NYC). This seems like the appropriate place to mention it.

An attempt at clarity on raw/jpg and the source of 'hidden' color
+Richard Erickson brought up some excellent points in a different post on g+ (https://plus.google.com/110008983647323406221/posts/dqjykLsUqSD) and I decided to try to shed a little clarity on what I do.

(disclaimer: this information is the best of my understanding and I welcome any corrections)

What is the difference between raw and JPG images?
Most digital DSLR cameras let you take pictures in one of the following modes: jpg, raw, or both raw and jpg.  When you take a picture in jpg mode, the camera compresses the information that the sensor saw into a jpg.  By doing this you lose some of the information, but your image takes up less room.  Photographers who want to do post processing often use the raw versions because it contains most or all of the light/color information captured by your camera's sensor.

What do I do?
I process based on the raw image so I sometimes enhance colors that would not have been visible in the compressed jpg version my camera output.  In my before/after transitions, I have a tendency to use the jpg as the before version because it's already in the right format for me to create the jpg.  I am open to any thoughts on enhancing the credibility of my transitions by using the raw version instead.

+Richard Erickson, the longer version of your answer is that there were red tones in the raw image, but they certainly don't seem visible in the jpg image.  Let me know if that helps at all or is more confusing!
