Last week I attended a meeting with a leading law firm in Leeds. During the meeting I was asked the following question:
 
“So why do more startups fail than succeed?"
 
There are many reasons why startups fail. It often depends on which perspective you are looking at failure from

The Four Main Reason Startups Fail are:
- People, 
- Finance, 
- Market, 
- Product
 
Your typical investor will finger either the team (People) or funding (Finance).

Your typical startup founder will pinpoint failure to either the Market or Product.

The show where the Khemeia Network tries to 'uncover' the Khemeia team. This week saw Khemeia Network Presenter, Danielle Daggett, sit down with Jon Stephenson (Head of Business Insights).

LEEDS, West Yorkshire
 -- "It's been a bit of a roller coaster at times." says Stephenson about his 5 years at Khemeia.
 
Stephenson recalls the early days where Khemeia did innovation work that was sponsored by the Government. This typically involved determining the commercial viability of someone's idea.
 
**"Now, we are Yorkshire's Innovation Agency."*
 Stephenson explains. The focus is now more on innovation - taking ideas to market and giving the client everything they need along the way.

Start with why!
It's as simple as that. Really focus on why you do what you do, instead of what you do. Once you understand your why, you will development a deeper connection with your customers leading to greater market success.

Ever notice how Apple 
usually start their sentences with, "We believe..." or "We see a world...." They are telling you why they make iPhones, iPads and iMacs- not just "We make iPhones. Buy from us!" If you can get customers believing in your why then they will buy your product / service.

Almost everyone has ideas. But it doesn't necessarily mean that your idea is a good one.
 
The best ideas are ones that actually solve a problem.
 
As a startup, you may think your idea solves a problem. But what are you basing that on?

- Are you going on a hunch?

- Or does your product/service actually solve an existing problem?
 
Simple Startup Formula:

1. Find the biggest problem
2. Solve it
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2

The show where the Khemeia Network ask all sorts of questions as we try to 'uncover' the Khemeia team. This week saw Khemeia Network Presenter, Danielle Daggett, sit down with Jon Stephenson (Head of Business Insights).

LEEDS, West Yorkshire -- "If you don't like a challenge, you're in the wrong place." Harsh but true words spoken by Khemeia veteran, Jon Stephenson when asked about what it takes to become a Khemeia person.
 
Khemeia is renowned for achieving so much but yet, with such a small team. Khemeia Director, Ian Sharp has been a fan of the "Associate Model" or "Strategic Partnership Model" where Khemeia will bring in trusted people to help on certain projects. But the core of the work is done by just a few people.
 
People from all over the world have commented and been impressed with Khemeia's ability to do so much with little resources. But that is all down to good people. Sharp has been very selective in who he picked. Once of the core things Sharp has talked about is the ability to solve problems - something which Stephenson echoes in this interview.

You've got to look at a challenge and work out the best way of solving it, and that involves being able to adapt and learn."
 
The adaptive nature of how Khemeia approaches things is a key cornerstone in the business and may be one of the reasons why Khemeia people are so effective.

Being a part of Khemeia - Yorkshire's Innovation Agency, we get excited about the mention of innovation.

Whenever we go to networking events or business conferences (particularly in Yorkshire) we hear a lot about innovation. Everyone is talking about innovation!

But that's the problem - everyone is talking about innovation. No one is actually DOING innovation!
 
- What's actually happening?
- Where is the fruit of innovation?
- What can we actually see as a result of all this talking?
 
The truth is a lot of people talk a good game when it comes to innovation.

Not many are brave enough to do it.
 
We believe that innovation requires you to 'dare to be different.'

It does take courage. It does require facing fears. Oh yeah, here's the other thing. The few that actually do start innovating give up after their first challenge.
 
What's the point?
 
Innovation will require a constant overcoming of challenges. It's not easy. But then again, anything of value is worth fighting for.
 
Stop talking about innovation. Just start! Do something! 

Stop making excuses and start innovating!
