This is by far the clearest explanation I've seen of everything so far. (And I'm at Berkeley!) Thank you!

What's not clear to me is how any of the non-video public course content is affected by this... Berkeley hasn't said anything to my knowledge to suggest that stuff be put behind auth, but the DOJ letter clearly mentions inaccessible course materials. There are also many courses that operate entirely or mostly outside of bCourses/Canvas and I wonder whether there will be specific changes to that.
What would also happen if faculty choose to share videos on their own? I've heard at least a few want to do this.

Also as a point of lockdown for videos behind auth: The current situation is pretty chaotic. First new captures were only behind CalNet but all campus users could get them, and later they started restricting access based on enrollment status, and I don't know how long it will last but I no longer have access to many courses that I was enrolled in years ago. Tbh, I wasn't going to personally review most of them at this point, but I do know (and once was a) TA who used those to verify content about past course offerings.

So far Canvas is the only LMS I've been (mostly) happy with, and UC Berkeley I'm fully behind the switch! I definitely second the notion that the Canvas API is / will be more helpful for learning analysis than Instructure's home-built tools.

I've been a TA for a medium-size CS class at UC Berkeley, and the availability (and ease + documentation) of the Canvas API has been significant in allowing us to build infrastructure to magnate the class and review assignments.

I've skimmed other LMS's for APIs and while there are some out there, few seem to  compare to how easy it's been to integrate with Canvas. (At least based on reading the docs!)

Who manages developer.berkeley.edu? It'd be great if the bCourses API could be added to the page. It's pretty robust and easy to use. :)

Great post, and so very true!

I wish VC's (or even more people) would recognize that improvement in education (be it access, better curriculum, or something small) is still improvement and valuable. You need not disrupt or revolutionize to make a difference!

Is the video of the whole talk available?

I'm very curious to see where edX goes in the next few years with the work that's being put into OpenedX. It's crazy to think how much has changed in the past few years!
