My 7-year-old daughter has read up through book 5 and loves it. She definitely does NOT consider it a "boy's book." I think if it was innately male, a little girl like her would have some sense it was a "boyish" thing.

I think that off-the-cuff remark was more a side-effect of that little girl's parents and their ridiculous notions.
We try and keep a neutral stance on everything with our 4-yr old girl. As a result, she was Darth Vader for Halloween. It's working!
