My take-away's from #Mozcon

Top Points:
1. Reciprocal loyalty: the brand should be also loyal to the customer – Johanna Lord
2. Transparency wins in content, be open.  Use data you have.
3. Do what matters (even if it can’t be measured)
4. Keywords are becoming semantic, as users trust Google it influences their keywords. Search engines are starting to understand and not just index. Context is being added to our queries.
5. It isn’t a strategy if you can’t maintain it
6. Don’t just think about SEO, think about clickability and shareworthyness (in terms of keywords & title tags)
7. From Kyle Rush who executed more than 500 experiments as part of the 2012 presidential election Only 20% of tests drove an improvement, the others were statistically invalid or showed a decline – adjust your expectations when running tests

Top Stats
• 77% of mobile users are in proximity of a desktop – mobile is choice
• 8% of internet users account for 85% of clicks on display ads
• Of 10K SERPs just 15% are the traditional 10 link SERP’s – the traditional SERP is disappearing

My Favorite Speakers:
1. Wil Reynolds
2. Rand Fishkin
3. Mackenzie Fogelson
4. Wil Critchlow
5. Dharmesh Shah

Other mentions:
Richard Baxter – For awesome link building tactics
Karen McGrane – Great presentation through storytelling, and examples of mobile done right
Phil Nottingham – Very entertaining presentation and tips for video success
Carin Overturf –  Great communication tips in times of crisis
Johanna Lord – Reciprocal loyalty, IMHO the best quote of the conference
Adam Audette – Ecom specific presentation with great technical tips
Natalie Nahai – Web psychology, I bought her book – enough said
Pete Myers –The SERP we use to know no longer exists – demonstrated 85 different features and widgets

I know I missed a few, and I can honestly say every presenter was strong.  I highly recommend checking out the presentations if you were not able to make it (link below), and to buy your ticket for next years show now.

Justin Briggs recent post on Authorship Impact on CTR to is a great recap of some significant changes in user behavior.  The bottom line as I read it, annotations are pulling users down the page, and the golden triangle concept not longer carries as much weight.

Very cool use of Google Maps
"Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes!" was the famous order given during the Battle of Bunker Hill. This famous monument is a stop on the Boston Freedom Trail, and has a fascinating past. Built to commemorate one of the bloodiest battles during the Siege of Boston, it replaced an ...

When hiring for an SEO role, does the ability to get stuff done matter more than actual SEO experience?

I would rather train someone in SEO if they have hustle and a proven track record of executing projects.  The ramp up time far outweighs the long term impact of someone who fails to execute and complete projects.

Our group rented 6 snowmobiles from Lil'man in Feb of 2015. The machines he rents out are very old, one of the them had a 2002 sticker on it (12 years old), but they all looked at least that old, or older. We were told that we "couldn't get lost" and that all routes come back to the main road, however they didn't give us a map. When we asked for one, the guy just said again, "you can't get lost". My first machine ended up stalling out twice on me, we called them up and he told us to bring it back for a swap out. The replacement machine he gave me, had no windshield and the heated grips were broken - so it was very cold, it ended up taking most of the fun out of the experience. My replacement machine ended up stalling out while just riding along, the engine slowly bogged down and then just died. This happened 4 times, then the machine refused to start again. We were several miles out, with no cell service so we sent our group ahead to let them know we stalled out again and needed to be picked up. Apparently they owner gave my brother a hard time about sending someone out - and it took them almost a 1/2 hour to do so (when temps was in the teens). When the rescue sled finally got there, he tried to get the machine started, but couldn't. He admitted that the sled was a "piece of sh*t". We ended up hopping on with another member from our original group who helped the rescue sled find us. We ended up being stranded for just over an hour. The owner did refund us for half price. However, other rental fleets are cheaper, offer longer hours and brand new machines. I would strongly advise you consider other options.

Great little cafe. Excellent breakfast sandwiches, coffee and quick lunch items. Their only draw back, unfortunately there is no seating, so it's all take out. Very friendly owners & chief! I visit at least weekly.

Excellent! I've had my car serviced there twice, once for tires, breaks and rotors and another time for a 100K tune up. I thought the tires and brakes were a fair service, and I shopped that around a bit. When I needed the 100K tune-up, I realized Ron's is much more than just tires. They did my timing belt, water pump, AC & power steering belts, oil change, transmission fluid change, radiator flush, repaired a muffler, and got a inspection sticker put on the car - for MUCH less than my old mechanic quoted me. Great, honest service, and an excellent price! I will be servicing my car here from now on.

Fantastic! Great food, by far the best in the area and the service is amazing too. If this was in Boston prices would twice what they are here. A great find, and a new favorite. We'll be back many more times.
