"Among Westerners, the data showed that Americans were often the most unusual, leading the researchers to conclude that “American participants are exceptional even within the unusual population of Westerners—outliers among outliers.”

Given the data, they concluded that social scientists could not possibly have picked a worse population from which to draw broad generalizations. Researchers had been doing the equivalent of studying penguins while believing that they were learning insights applicable to all birds."

"When the car parking building opens, it will bring 805 new parking spaces to the Central City, including 24 disability parking spaces and 10 charging parks for electric vehicles. A bike stand on the ground floor, at the corner of Lichfield Street and Plymouth Lane will have space for 96 bikes.
...
The building is expected to fully open in October 2017."

"To track the spread of the domestic cat, the authors of the new study, published in Ecology and Evolution, examined DNA taken from bones and teeth of ancient cat remains. They also studied samples from the skin and hair of mummified Egyptian cats (and you thought emptying the litter tray was bad enough).

They found that all modern cats have ancestors among the Near Eastern and Egyptian cats, although the contributions of these two groups to the gene pool of today’s cats probably happened at different times. "

Possible trigger warnng for bad in/around-game experiences
#consent
"As our culture begins to shift into one where rape jokes aren't cool anymore and consent is taught in schools, gaming seems to have yet to catch up.

For decades now, the power to touch someone and bend them to your will has been a common theme in many games. It's not dependent on trad or OSR or indie. It pops up pretty consistently in nerd culture.
...
In a hobby where we complain about railroads and demand player agency, why do we think it's okay to strip away agency from other people?"

"Dotted about the former Yugoslavia are Spomeniks – largely forgotten monuments, often erected in silent, empty landscapes, like sentinels from another world. Even their collective label sounds alien. (It’s Serbo-Croatian for “monuments.” )"

"At times, our response to the global refugee crisis has bordered on the farcical. Almost overnight. Canada took in thousands of Syrian refugees in a community-based programme that it largely built up as it went. Last year our government announced a “pilot” programme (explicitly based on the Canadian model) that would take in 25 refugees. ... On Monday, PM English indicated that the pilot programme for those lucky 25 was still on the drawing board, 12 months down the track."

"The post said the shop, which is the organisation's main fundraising source, would be closed until further notice.
...
The shop has had two recent incidents: one earlier this year where someone broke a window but did not get inside, and another burglary in December last year."
