Student friendly Common Core Standards (k-6) thanks +Dara Kappel
2M - I think there are many advantages for the students and teachers to unpack learning standards. In my district the expectation is that all students know the learning target for each subject every day. That doesn't mean they need to memorize what standard it is. In my classroom I give each student a copy of kid friendly "I CAN" statements (see link attached) and at the start of each lesson we choral read that statement together and discuss what that means. I used to have them posted on the whiteboard but not everyone could see them and only the selected students would read them and be engaged. The way I do it now gets the whole class involved. As we master the standard we check off that box. Some standards are repeated throughout the year so you could use dates or additional check marks.

The advantages for students is that they know what their learning target is for that lesson and they are given options for demonstrating what they learned. At the end of the lesson we wrap up by choral reading that same "I CAN" statement and discussing whether or not we reached our target by using exit tickets, verbal or non-verbal responses.

The disadvantage might be that the way the students are understanding if they are successful in reaching their learning targets because we are not using standards based report cards yet.
