You might consider a second, less obvious camera with no illuminator, that just takes advantage the IR light from the first camera.  In fact the first "camera" could also be just a shell with the IR LEDs but no camera.

+John Beale Thanks for the ideas. The camera I have installed makes a nice deterrent as you can see in the video. Who knows whether he would have had a go at our car that night if the camera wasn't there. I have considered adding another camera up behind a big piece of lumber above the car looking back into the carport. I am in the process of setting up motion detection via arduinos and passive infrared to make the system more reliable. I get a lot of false alarms.

I doubt many people did raytracing on the older R-Pi models. But if you did, you definitely should upgrade to Pi 2 for an 11x speedup. Results for  povray -benchmark

RPi B+ : Trace Time:    10 hours 47 minutes 42 seconds (38862.191 seconds)
RPi 2  : Trace Time:     0 hours 57 minutes 36 seconds (3456.137 seconds)

You can get these panel meters for about $7 on ebay. There is a forum thread about them at http://www.eevblog.com/forum/projects/$5-voltmeter-with-5-digit-(0-1mv)-resolution/

I read an article about a fellow who ran some fortran benchmarks to compare with machines he's worked on in the past. i feel guilty my old pi has dust on it. but, I might just let it go and pick up a pi2!

The "sun" ice cube started out slightly larger. The melt rate was complicated by the fact that runoff water from both pieces of ice pooled together in the middle.

No obvious wings or other bird-like features, so current thinking is it may be some kind of fruit which was dropped by a bird.

Thought this was kind of cute: a compact OpenWRT platform with wifi designed for embedded use, instead of the usual router. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1133560316/black-swift-tiny-wireless-computer

A FPGA is just a large collection of logic gates (and, or, not, flip-flop...) that you can connect together by writing some code, instead of physically connecting wires. A good place to start is www.fpga4fun.com
