Jealous of the extravagance, but in love with it too

Good morning and Happy Friday. I'm really looking forward to the weekend. Today is also World Environment Day so let's take a moment and think about the environment where we live. If we can make a positive change, even a small one, the better! 😄

Garden Of Colour, Skagit Valley...
I really enjoyed the mix of colours in this garden. Taken at this year's Skagit Valley Tulip Festival, Washington State, USA.

Resharing from my page is very much appreciated. Please, no unauthorized use of any of my photos.

It's Owly a Kiss

Two newly-fledged Burrowing Owl chicks, standing on one leg, get some love and grooming attention from their mother. These tiny owls nest in burrows underground and emerge when the weather is cooler.

This is so cool
Basketball Physics! | Shot Science Basketball
There are no less than FOUR main forces acting upon a basketball during your shot:

Gravity
The most dominant force acting on a basketball in flight will invariably be gravity. This particular force acts in the vertical plane as it pulls the ball straight back down towards the Earth. It's what keeps your feet on the ground and pulls you back down when you jump.

Drag Force
The drag force is also referred to as "air resistance" or "friction" because, as the ball moves through the air, air molecules oppose the basketball’s movement. The drag force depends on three things: the density of the air (because more molecules results in more resistance), the contact/ surface area of the ball, and the velocity of the ball itself.

Magnus Force
The Magnus Force is a little crazy! It's a result of the translational velocity and the spin of the ball creating an imbalance in friction across the surface of the ball; causing it to deflect ever so slightly in response. If the basketball moves horizontally forward through the air with backspin, as a proper basketball shot should, the Magnus Force acts upward on it. It's the force responsible for a curveball in baseball and the curving of corner kicks in soccer.

Buoyant Force
The behavior of an object submerged in a fluid (e.g. a basketball suspended in air) is governed by Archimedes' Principle, which states that an object completely or partially submerged in a fluid experiences an upward force on the object that is equal to the weight of the fluid that is displaced by the object. You can see this when you submerge a basketball in your bathtub and observe the level of the water in the tub rising to compensate. This is also the force that explains why boats and ice cubes float. It's caused by the pressure difference (however small) between the top and bottom of the ball. Higher pressure on the bottom of the ball exerts a force up.

--

QUESTION: What are some other basketball physics you'd want to see explained?

TAG anyone that will think this is interesting!

This drought has gone too far!
#CONAN Mono: Due to the drought, California is set to impose new water cutbacks this month. For example, men at strip clubs are now only allowed to "Make it drizzle." MORE jokes @ teamcoco.com/jokes

Even you, Abu! Here he is shortly after he moved to Atlanta in 2007. He’s now 9 years old and is the largest member of our herd.
