Recently, my daughter and I have had issues with eye-sight. This all came vividly into vision when I coincidentally (there are no coincidences!) was teaching a Chakra Yoga class this week on the Sixth Chakra - Third Eye (Light) which is linked to vision. Libby had her palm rested on her right eye for over a week. She couldn't look out the eye at all unless I pried it open with my fingers to insert the dreaded drops. We tried Polysporin Pink Eye treatment, and then when that failed went to the doctor. And two days later, when I was told by her doctor's office just to go to the emergency room, I crashed. What was going on? We met with a doctor who said probably there were a couple things going on, but he appeared really only to be guessing. We agreed on the diagnosis of Surfer's Eye (people who spend a lot of time outdoors are susceptible), but Libby didn't ever remember getting anything in her eye! There were no big bouts of tears or trauma.

Two weeks before , I had purchase my first set of reading glasses from the dollar store after my cell phone was really just suddenly too blurry to read, and reading at night before bed from my very small print book had just become too much of a chore. After meditation and clearing up my trust issues with the Universe and asking for signs (I got them right away) everything repaired itself. I stopped needing the glasses altogether.

So the Third Eye Chakra is about seeing, but not just with our eyes in the present, it is seeing the past, present and future. It is linked to Clairvoyance "clear vision" or commonly referred to psychic abilities.

If you want to know if your Third Eye chakra is out of balance, first you might notice issues with headaches and you might have issues with seeing.

Things you can do to improve it. The seed sound is "mmmm" so you could chant this like you would an "AUM" or even thinking the sound. I found a few favourite tunes that have the "MMMM' lyric in it...two from Ed Sheeran, so singing is good.

There are also yoga poses that stimulate the third eye (located slightly above the middle of your eyes). It is related to the pineal gland, and when we stimulate the pineal gland, we get some of those feel good hormones going. This can help fight anxiety and depression as well.

CHILDS POSE: with the forehead resting on the floor, press the third eye area against the mat.

FORWARD FOLD: with the third eye pressed against the knee or shins. Eventually try to straighten the legs, but in the beginning you may need to bend the knees slightly.

DOLPHIN POSE: sends the energy toward the third eye area, and great for the circulation. Place your forearms on the floor and straighten the legs and point the sacrum toward the ceiling, so you are in what looks like downward dog with bent arms on the floor.

JANUSIRSASANA: or head-to-knee pose, again effective because we are directing the energy toward the third eye with the head down on the knee. Start sitting with your legs straight in front of you and then open them up in a wide "V." From here bend one of your legs and fold forward with your head resting on your knee (again...knee might be slightly bent in the beginning).

My latest project "Stronger" (at the Collingwood YMCA) involves helping teens between 13 and 17 get stronger through their yoga practise, not just physically but emotionally, psychology. I will teach techniques for breathing, stretches which help stimulate the mind when emotions feel overwhelming or at the other spectrum, bored, tired, lazy. We sill discuss some of the challenges they might be facing with their new changing bodies and promote a positive self image. Yoga is great for body awareness.

You can sign up for this workshop by calling the front desk at the Y or email me for more information: nancycoxcoaching@gmail.com - We will start next Thursday!

My have a unique approach to teaching children's yoga I call Smartkidz Yoga. I integrate exercises from Brain Gym to help harmonize the right and left brain.
This helps your kids:

1. focus better in school
2. creates more feelings of peace and calm
3. increases their ability to self-regulate

I teach children how to recognize their emotions, and some exercises they can do to return to homeostasis, a place of feeling more grounded (feeling better).

What is the most embarrassing moment of your life? What if people knew? Is this a question of ego or pride? How do you embrace the bumps and bruises of life and still come out loving yourself no matter what? This the very topic I address! I hope you enjoy it.
