We're limited again by the lack of survey data at the time, but this is one of the better treatments of the 1971 PC win.

"There will be those who will try to persuade you to give up our cause. But that cause is much bigger than any one leader. Answer them by recommitting with energy and determination to our work. Remember our proud history of social justice, universal health care, public pensions and making sure no one is left behind. Let’s continue to move forward."

A leader to the very end.

If you can't wait to vote for Shannon. You can join the Alberta NDP and then vote for her to win the nomination: http://www.albertandp.ca/Join.cfm
The provincial election will likely be sometime this fall.

From the Calgary Herald:
"I never meant to imply that they didn't do enough; I was still talking in generalities." He said he believes the grandparents did everything they could to protect Elizabeth. Griffiths, 38, also said many of his comments were of a more general nature. He was trying impress that civil servants do everything they can in these situations, and they are not necessarily at fault when a child dies.

What Griffiths clearly doesn't understand is that the agencies designed to protect and care for the children of this province do not do enough. Together, child services, the police and doctors agreed it was in the best interest of the child to stay with the mother. A toddler is unable to defend themselves verbally or physically against injustice.

In the past few years, the AB government has come under fire repeatedly after reports of neglect, physical abuse, emotional abuse, and even death of children in foster homes. These children were taken from dangerous situations and placed in loosely controlled, and even more dangerous situations. At the governments hands.

The only thing anyone in government right should be saying and doing is calling for an in-depth investigation on how the agencies responsible let this happen, and how to ensure children are truly protected in this province.

This man wants to be Premier?

Womanspace was part of the restorative justice program, and we worked with women to help them regain confidence in themselves and learn skills that would prevent further criminal activity out of desperation.

Shannon Phillips, who tipped me off to this, said: "You know, because sending people to jail for stealing $36 worth of groceries is a good use of our taxpayers' money."

Our government made the call it is better to use MORE tax payer money to incarcerate (often single mothers) for petty crimes than use less to work with those who make mistakes.

The Alberta Advantage?

Disappointing, though in a way understandable.

Via Sam Power: "At the height of their earning potential, men earn over $22,800 more a year than women."

So often I hear that women have "made it" and that why should men be punished for women who cannot or will not work as much as men will and do. I call bull shit every time. Women do not earn less because they work less hard or less often as men - they just earn less. Period.
