OK... I have listened or watched EVERY PODCAST you have put up Jonathan and I fully respect what you do and your opinions and I am usually pretty much TOTALLY on the same page. I love what you are putting out into the world and how you got to this point. I love that you are a parent and get that too... BUT...I have to say, I had a really hard time with this guy. Let me start by saying his artwork is wildly interesting and his technique is strong... He is clearly coming through as an illustrator to me. (Full disclosure... BFA Washington University School of Art 1990- major Fashion Design/ minor: Business... Was successful as a fashion designer, textile print artist and fashion illustrator prior to having my 2nd child(13) and found ceramics/clay as a studio artist a little over 10 years ago) HOWEVER, I felt there were some fatal flaws in what he was putting out into the world through this conversation. He had a lot of good thoughts re:social media to get the work out into the world/ use of internet to resource and learn/ work on your own voice and move forward as early as possible... BUT #1 I truly believe the fact that he was a current student at RISD when he was starting to "get jobs on (his) own" was a complete positive to the companies that were hiring him. They may have seen his talent and drive but it was VALIDATED by his acceptance and success while at RISD. #2 He is TWENTY FIVE... I was quite successful at 25... I was resourceful, I thought out of the box, I went for the big job and got it... GOLDEN but... Life twists and turns so much between 25 and 45 and I will also say that there are A LOT of talented people out there and frankly, some of it is being at the right place at the right time and the connections made along the way... which brings me to #3 "Don't go to college and study art if you want to be an artist " as it is a waste of money.... That is tough because I DO believe that the price of these higher institutions is ridiculous(I have a son who will be applying in the fall)... HOWEVER...there are various sorts of schools... associate based degree schools, etc... and your art education has validity in several areas, PARTICULARLY in the applied arts... We all know that we learn the most once we are OUT THERE DOING IT... but... I designed and had a self made line while I was in school too... You can supplement and grow while in school but there are a lot of things in class and out of class that you will learn and grow with over the 2 to 4 years that you are in school... Beyond that, you can minor in Business or major in Business(his idea of go to school for something else) or education... I don't view these other endeavors as "back-ups" per se but having various facets of interest through out your life that you may incorporate at anytime... I just felt that you have many great, strong, cool dories and personalities that I am completely affected by after listening to the whole interview with each.. I waited for this guy to turn it around and I just felt that it was lacking. It is not his fault. He doesn't have the experience to say definitively what he is saying. Only time will tell....That said... please keep the good ones coming so I can continue to tell everyone I know about your site and your courses/ workshops (oh I read Uncertainty too-loved it) and I can watch as you continue to show us what it is for you to Live (YOUR) Good Life as we live ours.
