Happy Thanksgiving!

Black Friday is coming upon us. What do we wish in such days? To be alerted in time, about what and where can be bought, at great prices, with great add-ons, exactly what we wished for.

Here's what we changed as well in new, latest version of IPHost: alerting. Alerts are now simpler to understand (they are simple actions, like: send email, show pop-up and so on). And you can group them, simple actions, into named alerts. To save your time, simple actions can be reused by any number of alerts.

To make things even more convenient, every simple action can be scheduled. For example, you can alert day shift of system administrators in daylight, and night shift in all the rest. Just add schedule to corresponding actions, and you have made it, without much efforts.

You can also test the alerts, without changing monitor state. They will be executed as if they were actually executed, but you don't have to change monitor state.

Do we have more about that? Of course we do. Just give our new version a try and contact us if you ever would need assistance from us.

We have introduced simplified licensing in bew release, v4.0 build 10090: single distribution for both shareware and freeware versions of IPHost.

The approach is quite simple: instead of switching to trial limited mode, when initial 30-days trial is over, IPHost will switch to freeware mode. No nag screens, no expiration - you just continue to use the product as free.

New freeware limits make the product suitable for small monitoring setup (you have up to 50 active monitors, one of which can be Web Transaction Monitor, other you can use in any combination - save SNMP and WMI-based monitors.

50 monitors limit means you can only run up to 50 monitors. You can create arbitrary number of them, but only can run 50 of them.

Note that as freeware version user, your help options include program help, IPHost Knowledge basr and online Help, published on the product site.

Commercial license includes maintenance&support, whic includes priority email support (we canassist you in setting up monitors, find optimal monitoring setup, and even fix your broken monitoring database - all that is covered by maiuntenance&support subscription.

We appreciate your feedback! If you can feature proposals, any ideas on how to improve the product, feel free to contact us! Just visit the product site and click on "Support.

Now that our new release, v4.0 build 10090 is out, we would like to start sharing news about its features and improvements.

We upgraded our initial commerce license, Basic 100, to Basic 200. The change will affect not only new licenses; we will upgrade, free of charge, all our existing owners of that license. We also do not release separate freeware version of IPHost: when its initial trial ends, the program becomes freeware version, never expiring. You can have 50 active monitors of your selection indefinitely (please read our release notes for more info).

Another change affects using of so called spike filters. In many situations, performance problem can be temporary and not indicating real state of network resource (for example: short connectivity loss, or target device temporary too busy). To avoid raising Down condition in such  a situation you can use spike filters.

Now they allow separate filtering of different problem conditions, manage general problem (such as name resolution problem) and allow you to set how many problem state switches to ignore, and whether you should change polling interval if filter is engaged).

The above allows you to avoid false alarms in busy networks.

We greatly appreciate feedback from our customers. We welcome you test our new release!

SMS over GSM modem alert allows to send SMS (text message) over GSM modem or phone attached to the monitoring host (a computer where IPHost Network Monitor is installed) as a problem notification. This alert is the most reliable mechanism for sending notifications about system failures or serious degradation in application performance.  A GSM modem can be a dedicated modem device with a serial, USB or Bluetooth connection, or a cell (mobile) phone that provides GSM modem capabilities.

SMS over GSM modem alert functionality is available in every edition of IPHost Network Monitor. This feature is also included in trial version.

If there's no Internet connection from network where IPHost is installed, SMS alerts can be a means to notify of connectivity lost.

As we are approaching release date of  IPHost Network Monitor new release, it's worth mentioning the matters of security are extremely important to us. Not only security of our product itself, but matters of security of your resources as well.

The primary rule of information security is "Assume nothing". In every situation, no assumptions of any kind should be used, but only facts. For example, if you are using HTTPS (in such monitors as HTTP(S) monitor or Web Transaction Monitor), you should pat extra attention to SSL certificate of the remote host monitor connects to.

Both monitors can ignore SSL certificates errors, but we strongly recommend thinking twice before doing that.

Instead, using our Run Script or Program monitor, you can easily check any secure connection (HTTPS, and/or any other utilizing TLS) for possible security problems. Do you want to know exactly how? Contact our tech.support, we will be glad to provide you with simple script to do that.

Intranets are often considered safe enough to enforce strong security policy (not only using strong passwords and changing them periodically, but also phasing out all insecure protocols from the local network). Remember the primary rule we have mentioned above? Intranet should not be considered safe.

So, if you are willing to make your intranet safe, IPHost Network Monitor can be your tool of making that simpler. Wherever any security-related problems can be detected, IPHost can report about it promptly. Contact us to know how. It's really not rocket science.

May your network environment be always safe and secure!

When defining alerts, certain data can be available from so called template variables. You can detect them throughout the interface, since they all start with dollar sign ('$').

Template variables can make creating monitoring a simpler task. For example. if you need to alert user if they have too lareg an inbox (that means too many messages are just kept there), and if there's a simple rule how inbox file name is deriveed from email address, you can use monitor name to corresponding file and specify corresponding email address in alert.

That simple trick can be used in other situations, as well. By searching for "template variables" on IPHost site, you can easily find all corresponding online sections. Simply put, if something can be expressed by means of a template variable, use it.

Using hardcoded strings instead has its drawback. Copying/cloning monitor can become a nuisance. Moving IPHost installation onto another computer might as well become a boring process, if you have to manually change too many parameters in too many places.

Note also, that if you plan to use alerting media wth restrictions on contet length, such as SMS, you should change its alerting template, to use as short information chunks as possible. You can start with default alerting template already existing on your installation, to derive whatever you need for your given task.

Do you think there are template variables not yet available, but surely useful? Don't hesitate to contact us - we strive to take into account as many users' suggestions/feature request as possible.
