My mental illness has made it hard for me to think clearly in the past. I became nervous and depressed. I no longer have depression. I am not nervous much anymore either, and I can think better and have learned to become a writer. I am a self-taught artist and like to paint natural forest waterfalls. Painting and the ability to think make me feel good.

Robert and I are artists, my friend Robert wanted to do a piece of art for the capital. He said could I get some help and I said “yes, I will help”. We love working together and expressing ourselves through the art they do. We felt joy and big smiles came upon our faces as we expressed the art of the man and woman. We are relaxed and confident in our expression together and a job well done.

The obstacles I have faced in life are bad depression, Schizophrenia, anxiety, nervousness, emotions… My biggest goal is learning to control my emotions and anxiety better each day.

I make art because it is fun for me. It relaxes me and helps me to control the anxiety I feel. I am self-taught, but enjoy measuring and using straight edges, combining geometric shapes and bright colors in an orderly fashion.

I live in Montgomery, Alabama. During the day I am at the Burgess Center. In my spare time I like to draw and listen to music. I call myself “The Artist.” I chose to draw “Charlie” because I like trucks.

I live in Montgomery, Alabama with my mom. I currently attend the Burgess Center during the day. In my spare time I enjoy taking watching movies, drawing, and making things with my hands. I chose this drawing because I just love the spring and the beautiful flowers that come out during that time of year.

Depression is my illness. I was once facing obesity and homelessness as well. In 2003 that all changed. I ended up in a one room apartment near the Highland Golf and Racket Club on the south side of Birmingham. I still live in the Southside Birmingham community.

I started my formal training as an artist under Sally Smith through my involvement with the 1920 Club. Now I’m working with our new resident artist, R. Daniel Long, Jr. I enjoy using realism to capture moments of great beauty.

I have struggled with something all of my life. After my accident I was diagnosed with schizophrenia and my life changed forever. Initially I heard voices and saw things that others could not hear or see. I also could feel things that were not real to others. I have also been diagnosed with a personality disorder and the struggle between the different personalities causes extreme pain. Almost like a fight between good and evil.

All of my life I have had to overcome many medical and mental problems starting when I was born. When I was just a few months old I had to have a shunt put in the back of my head. I have had many surgeries throughout my life. I have schizophrenia, seizure disorder, Garland syndrome, and hydrocephalus. I am stable on my medications and attend classes in a day treatment program. I have very supportive family. I have been able to live independently in past few years, since transitioning from a group home. I am self-taught in my art and use it as an outlet for feelings and emotions, as a coping skill.

This year I am very proud to be a part of the Capitol Showcase. It is truly an honor and a blessing!

Through a class at the Armory Learning Arts Center, I had the opportunity to study art and paint this unique painting. The teacher there was wonderful! You should definitely study there. A studio full of artists is always a lot of fun.

Art is an expression of the human being, heart, mind, body, and soul. Lately, I have done less artwork than usual, yet it is still so much a part of my life. Thank you to the Alabama Department of Mental Health for hosting this really neat exhibition. It is nice to see a surprising variety of artworks done by so many talented people. This is truly a real celebration!

I’ve been diagnosed with Impulsive Type, Depression, and Psychosis NOS. I am very social and very well known in my hometown. I enjoy the outdoors and like to go out as much as possible. I enjoy long walks in my neighborhood and maintaining my garden. I am devoted to attending church and enjoy visiting several local churches.

I enjoy making scrapbooks and collages and have a good eye for picking items out of magazines and newspapers to put together to make colorful and delightful collages. My artistic eye is also displayed in my choice of attire. I like to be well groomed and dressed, I also love to be complimented on various clothing I pick out for the day.
