I've just posted my initial review of the Fujifilm XT-1. I've only been shooting with it for a few weeks, but I've very impressed.
A little over a year ago I was out in Dubai for the Gulf Photo Plus (GPP) training event, chatting to Zack Arias over a morning coffee. I can't remember where the conversation started - pre-caffeine conversations are not...

+Nick McClelland Thanks buddy, yes great review as always from +David Nightingale Fuji sensors are strange it takes a while before you work out how to get the best of them. Lots of people just work on the Jpegs but in am totally in love with the tones from the a RAW files for my black and white work.

It's been a while since I posted anything here but I'm getting in touch to let you know that I've just published a new ebook for the Digital Photography School (DPS) - The Essential Guide to Black and White Photography.

Here's how DPS describe the book:

"Some of the most profound stories in history have been told with black and white photos. Isn’t it time you started creating some of your own?

The way we capture and process black and white photos might have changed over time, but the emotion, the passion and drama your black and white photos can invoke, will always be at its heart.

The Essential Guide to Black And White Photography has been created specifically to help you bring the timeless art of black and white photography to the modern science within your camera.

Together they’ll help you take remarkable black and white photos.

In this comprehensive eBook you’ll not only learn how to ‘see’ in black and white, you also learn the best gear to use, the special skills and setup needed to shoot and how to process your black and white photos to perfection – this eBook has it all covered."

Unfortunately, we haven't been able to negotiate a discount with DPS, but if you buy the ebook soon you'll also get a free bonus ebook - 10 Recipes to Amazing Black And White Photography (worth $9.99) - and the chance to win $1000 USD in their free prize draw!

To find out more about both ebooks, including the full list of contents, click the link for all the details:

Thanks Nick. Quite a few people have asked my if it's worth getting if they're already done the Udemy course, and I think it is. There's quite a bit more conceptual info that I don't cover in the videos, so it does cover new ground. That said, as dps offer a 60 money back guarantee, you could always grab a copy and just ask for your money back if you don't think it covers sufficient new ground.

As many of you know we've been offering The Art of Black and White Photography course on Udemy since 2012, and now have over 3.5K subscribers and pretty much 5 star reviews across the board.

As of today we're also offering it on chromasia (powered by Fedora) and for a very limited time - between now and this Sunday - you can grab yourself a bargain and sign up for just $9.

Why so cheap? We're 99% certain the new delivery system works, and works well, but there's only so much testing we can do before we release it. We don't think there will be any problems, and if there are we'll give anyone who signs up their money back, but until we're 100% certain we're offering the course at the not-to-be-reapeated price of just $9.

If you do sign up, and run into any problems, please let us know. If you're already a subscriber on Udemy, please spread the word.

This is a very cool image.

Finally getting my feet back under me a bit. There is nothing better to me than spending time out in the world exploring and taking photographs, but I'm finding it takes me longer and longer to dig out from the desk work that backs up while I'm gone. Throw in a family holiday and trying to sell/buy a house...you get the picture.

Valley of Fire in Nevada holds some amazing sandstone treasures. This is a small formation found in a wash while exploring with +Tony Kuyper last month. Tony is the master at these types of tight stone abstracts (thanks for the suggestions on this by the way Tony). I have a ways to go, but I certainly understand his fascination with the colors and shapes one can find in desert stone. This array of colors existed in the rock and the light, but I have done some fairly extensive developing to increase contrast and bring them out. Tony's luminosity masks and luminosity painting techniques were critical.

It's nice to be sharing new images again. Many more to come.

Photographer, photography and post-production instructor, and blogger.
Introduction
In 2003 I set up a photoblog, started working as a part-time photographer in 2005, and left academia in 2007 to pursue a full-time career in photography and post-production training. Since then I've worked on a variety of international commissions but have concentrated on developing Chromasia Training Limited: a company providing high quality photography and post-production training in the form of online tutorials, workshops, and one-to-one tuition.

I'm also a regular instructor for Gulf Photo Plus in Dubai, an instructor for PPSOP in the US, and have written three successful photography books.
