SpaceX successfully demonstrated the pad abort system on their Crew Dragon capsule. The capsule lifted off from SLC-40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at 9 AM ET. The 8 SuperDraco engines propelled Dragon into the sky above Cape Canaveral and over the Atlantic Ocean. The trunk then separated from the crew capsule and three parachutes deployed for a safe water landing. This is a BIG step in taking our astronauts to the ISS from American soil (currently we rely on Russia). The SpaceX Crew Dragon is designed to take astronauts to and from the ISS. The successful demonstration of the abort system is a crucial milestone under NASA’s Commercial Crew contract. In the next few months SpaceX will put their crew capsule through an in-flight abort test at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.
