Recently, I had a military spouse grow irate with my cashier because we didn't offer a discount to military family members. Her response, I believe, had nothing to do with my veteran-owned business being unappreciative of military families, and everything to do with the growing sense in our active and retired military community that as a group its members should be catered to because of their service. This is terribly misplaced.

What many do not understand, is more senior military service member spouses are 'expected' to 'volunteer' a great deal of their time, and provide leadership to more junior spouses. The sacrifices that are made are acknowledged with plaques, and certificates. However, I personally during the course of one year not only work my civil service job (GS), but in addition logged an additional 2000+ volunteer service hours for my spouses unit.
I've been called to circumvent until the bereavement detail officer could arrive, I've been called to council pregnant single soldiers. I've sat on AFAP (policy) panels. WE DO WORK FOR THE MILITARY; WE WORK FOR FREE. Granted I knew going in what I was on board for. I take pride in my service to my country both as a military spouse, and civil service employee. Do we get the short end of the stick? You betcha. That being said, it's a volunteer force, and whatever discounts given are given. Acting ugly does a disservice to all military spouses and degrades the integrity with which we devote our time and energy! Please accept my apologies for her behavior on behalf of military spouses who have taken service as an honor, not a road to benefits.

The undersecretary of the Army apologized for the military’s treatment of servicemembers exposed to chemical weapons in Iraq, and he announced new steps to provide medical support to those with lingering health effects and to recognize veterans who had been denied awards, according to the The New York Times.
