I have been self defense instructor for 25 years.  I specialize in those who are disabled and elderly.

The first thing I noticed was that the gauntlet of the weapon provides and almost perfect brace for those with disabling wrist injuries,

I very highly doubt that the contraption was meant for warriors which had suffered an injury which limited mobility, however.  Such disabilities pretty much invariably result in atrophied hand/arm strength, as the afflicted switch to the non-disabled arm to perform regular daily chores.  Swinging a great broadsword blade about would be increasingly difficult, although I suppose it is possible for someone with a great deal of motivation to minimize this by exercising the reduced limb every day.

I once made a set of scale armor for my brief time when I was involved in the Society for Creative Anachronisms here in the US.  A supply of bronze-colored aluminum sheet metal came into my possession so I cut it up into small rectangles, drilled holes in one leading edge, and sewed it onto a quilted gambeson, Bob's your uncle, I had cheap armor.  (Am I using the "Bob's your uncle" phrase correctly?  Dunno!)

Looked great, and protected well enough against thick rattan swords.  But it was loud!  Every time I moved, the bouncing metal lozenges produced a horrific din!  I walked about the events in a cloud of ratcheting noise and dirty looks, as conversations would have to be suspended until I moved out of earshot.

I eventually abandoned the armor.  Not because it was less than effective, but because I became so lonely due to the fact that no one would bother to try and talk over the noise.

Evidently a reference to the "I never drink... wine" comment. I'm not sure if that's in the book - it may have been a Hammer invention.

You mention that arms and armor were accepted as payment for debts.  Although I fully realize that it is extremely difficult to do, and that we are discussing a vast stretch of time so conditions would certainly change, I can't help but wonder how expensive swords and armor were to purchase.

It was, of course, my assumption that if the bullet struck a glancing blow to the skull rather than I direct hit then the animal survived, although I don't think there was a mention of this. You are indeed correct in that it could still have been fatal.

Student of mine, 19 years old, couldn't control violent startle reflex at the sound of gunfire.  Left a can of bear spray and expanding baton to help her feel less than helpless.

Depressed.  Can't help everyone, I know.  Still sucks.

Or she could use a cap gun, a toy for children.  The neighbors might object, however.
