Do you dread your annual appraisal? –don’t! It is a great opportunity to communicate with your line manager about what is going well and less well. You can discuss why and agree corrective action.
It’s also your opportunity to talk about your career development and ambitions. Together you can identify any skills gaps and plan training to plug them.

Motivation is an important part of a leader’s role, and understanding what motivates people is the first step to achieving a motivated workforce.
So we review some leadership and motivational theories including Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Adair’s Action Centred Leadership.
In some cases motivating staff is easier than others. If the work us interesting and you can develop your team, it is relatively easy to keep employees motivated and engaged. But if you are managing a team performing repetitive tasks, this is much more of a challenge.

Without good succession planning, the team may be weakened by events such as finding replacements for staff who leave the organisation or retire, or who are promoted. The lack of a suitable replacement may lead to good people being unable to move up the career ladder.
To avoid or minimise this, skills transfer should be a constant in the development of a strong team.

Writing an effective application letter is always a daunting task. we can help you focus on the information you need to include. Start by analysing what the course, job or programme you are applying for is about, and what is required of you. Then you can demonstrate in your application letter that you can fulfil the requirements, by addressing them individually

This is an absolutely vital skill for effective leaders. If they are disorganised, then so will their staff be. This is because their time will be used reacting to a poorly organised manager. Many people cannot manage their own time because their manager “steals their Time “.  We look at what good time management skills include, and the importance of managing expectations.

We continue our review of leadership and how it develops, using a football analogy. Can everyone be a great footballer? Or is it likely that someone with the innate skill, but no coaching, will be a better footballer than someone who does not have a gift for football who is given the best coaching available. Maybe the coaching is more important than the inherent skill? Maybe a combination of skill and coaching is most effective. How do we measure this? And how do we translate what we know into producing great leaders?

Think about charismatic leaders of industry such as Steve Jobs, and Mark Zuckerberg .. Their success emanates from being able to influence people, and persuade them to implement their Vision.
The ability to influence others is a skill that is highly prized by business and commerce. Recruiters are looking for people who can lead and influence their teams. Companies who recognize the talent will nurture it, keep those people close to them and harness the power to achieve their targets and for their own commercial gain.
