There's a surprise in the data from an investigation into Tesla safety by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. An anonymous reader quotes Bloomberg: [W]hile all Tesla vehicles come with the hardware necessary for Autopilot, you need a software upgrade that costs thousands of doll...

New submitter kugo2006 writes: NASA announced a plan to research 16 Psyche, an asteroid potentially as large as Mars and primarily composed of Iron and Nickel. The rock is unique in that it has an exposed core, likely a result of a series of collisions, according to Lindy Elkins-Tanton, Psyche's pri...

An anonymous reader quotes a report from The Verge: The Japanese probe Akatsuki has observed a massive gravity wave in the atmosphere of Venus. This is not the first time such a wave was observed on the Solar System's second planet, but it is the largest ever recorded, stretching just over 6,000 mil...

Longtime Slashdot reader Bruce Perens writes: David Rowe VK5DGR has been working on ultra-low-bandwidth digital voice codecs for years, and his latest quest has been to come up with a digital codec that would compete well with single-sideband modulation used by ham contesters to score the longest-di...

Triton is always quirky, fun, open and fanatic about their service. Newly refurbished rooms (I'm in the Kerouac/Ginsberg room with literally writings on the wall), golden pillars and free wine-tasting every day makes jack a happy pumpkin :) I always try to stay at the Triton when in SF.

Went here with two friends when the Google IO after hours party was too crowded. Very, very nice people serving, the best Bloody Mary I've ever had and terrific food that is really reasonably prized. Will go there again tonight, to start with another Bloody Mary ;)
