Hello, I am Ihar, college librarian in my professional life. Just completing the Session 1 activities. So far so good. :)

It looks like there is a general agreement that teaching is both a vocation and profession, not at the same degree necessarily. I wonder whether we may sometimes over-emphasise the vocastional aspect of teaching. What I mean is that vocation/calling is something that is being discovered. And dicovery requires a period of discernment. This probably means that it'd be wrong to ask a prospective teacher whether s/he has a vocation/call to teaching. Some may have it indeed; athers may discover it at some point in their professional life. What is peculiar about teaching is its focus on learners. A good teacher's concern is indeed on students, not the greater advancement of knowledge in the world, nor a particular discipline nor ideaology. However, many become teachers because they are good at and enjoy a particular discipline. So, professionalism and the sense of vocation are both dynamic notions - both may require time for being nurtured. #OCL4Ed
