West End Vancouver
Vancouver in the fall/winter. If it's sunny it's cold (0'C). If it's warm it's raining (10'C).

A couple of ideas as to why the image "does not look right".

Firstly, it's taken by a satellite much further away than either the Apollo 17 mission or the GEOS satellite.  Light intensity diminishes with the square of distance as does optical definition. Even in the vacuum of space.

Second, the image was taken during a pretty intense period of forest fires in Canada (July 6 2015) which created lots of smoke.  That's the darker bands you see near the top of the image.

What I find cool, and am surprised you missed it, is the brownish band around the edge.  The edge of the Earth in the image would have been taken through a longer slice of atmosphere than face on (the centre of the image) and I expect the brown is due to a mixture of fire smoke and pollution.  It would be interesting to compare to earlier images.

Also, I expect the image is mostly unprocessed and is what the camera saw as opposed to what our human eyes would see.  The Apollo 17 image is most likely very post processed whereas this image is not.

Epic Sunset - English Bay Vancouver - Dec 08 2015
British Columbia, being on the Pacific ocean gets what, in effect, is 'fresh' weather. Warm and cold air masses that have spent weeks floating over the largest ocean on the Earth. As such the associated sunsets and sunrises are more often than not spectacular.
