I've been a huge supporter and happy user of Airbnb for well over two years now, but if this is true -- that one of the company's co-founders asked the blogger who detailed a horrific burglary by an Airbnb guest to scrub her blog of the post about it -- I may never use the service again and will cancel my refundable upcoming stays. This is just plain wrong.
For what it's worth, I initially took Airbnb's side in this matter because it seemed like the burglary victim was incredibly naive. She accepted a guest without knowing the person's gender, which suggests that no background checking was done, the person did not have a user photo or a traceable digital "paper trail," the two did not correspond by phone call prior to the guest's stay, and "EJ" did not meet him/her in person when he/she arrived. I'm guessing the user did not have prior positive ratings from other Airbnb hosts that would have further provided reputation verification. This just seems stupid, IMHO.
But you know what else is stupid? Attempting a coverup.
