JEWELRY DESIGN CAMP
Next Sessions: Oct 6-12, 2013 and Oct 13-19, 2013

Immerse yourself into a week-long study of jewelry design theories, and their applications and manipulations with various materials, techniques and strategies.

Session 1: CONTEMPORIZING TRADITIONAL ETRUSCAN JEWELRY
This workshop is for anyone who loves to make jewelry, and wants to learn the theoretical underpinnings of good jewelry design, and some applications. This workshop is equally useful for beginner, intermediate and advanced student, alike.

We will be examining traditional Etruscan jewelry, and how we can understand it from the vantage point of good jewelry design principles. We will learn and practice some basic techniques of bead stringing, bead weaving, wire working, color working, and design planning. Then we will do some thinking and experimenting with these and other jewelry making concepts and techniques in order to create contemporary interpretations of two or three Etruscan pieces of jewelry to see what we can achieve.

Session 2: FRINGE, EDGE, STRAP, BAIL, SURFACE EMBELLISHMENT IN JEWELRY – ART OR NOT?
In this workshop, we begin to understand a piece of jewelry in terms of its anatomical parts.   We explore a range of techniques, theories and strategies for creating each element, combining elements into a whole, and managing the transitions from element to element in our piece.

The primary project is to create a beadwoven BezelWorks centerpiece pendant, with fringe, edge, strap, bail and surface embellishment.   This workshop is an intermediate/advanced level. Some previous experience with making jewelry (whether bead stringing, bead weaving or wire working) is required.

Our Orientation To Beads And Jewelry Findings Class Posted On-line

Over the years, we’ve found that people who bead and make jewelry have not necessarily learned how to make the best choices, when it comes to decide what beads, clasps, other findings, and stringing materials to include, and what Not to include, in a piece. People do not understand quality issues. They are often uninformed about workable materials and strategies to make their pieces more durable, more drape-able, and better able to move with the person as the jewelry is worn.

At The Center for Beadwork & Jewelry Arts and Land of Odds, we developed a curriculum that took a design approach concerned with teaching people how to make these kinds of choices. Everyone in our curriculum begins with this Orientation to Beads and Jewelry Findings class. We offer this opportunity for you, as well, on our blog.
