A great piece looking at the relationship between scientists' willingness to temper statements to avoid offending religious sensibilities and Kim Davis' willingness to exalt her own religious beliefs over the laws that govern our secular democracy.

When we read, we recognize words as pictures using the same region of our brains that recognizes faces.  Then our brains recreate the sound of a spoken word internally for us to get meaning.  Wild!

"Illinois was ranked as third most-corrupt state in the country, following New York and Los Angeles."  (#FacePalm)  (+NBC Chicago helpfully provided the Source link, to ensure they receive credit for their gaffes.)

It would have taken one hell of a quake to wake up Thomas Jefferson in 1915, considering he'd been dead about 90 years by then...

A quote by earthquake "expert" Paul Stoddard of Northern Illinois University:

“100 years ago or so, we had huge earthquakes in one winter that rang church bells in Boston, woke up Thomas Jefferson, you’ve heard all the stories. That really provides the biggest risk is a major earthquake in the New Madrid but it’s not something to lose sleep over. Generally earthquake risks in this part of the world are minimal. You might feel one but even if you felt one, it wouldn’t be large enough to do any damage but it’s always nice to be prepared just in case.”

Surprise! Chicago PD in the news again.  This time for allegedly operating the domestic equivalent of a CIA "black site."  The Guardian's article appears to be a bit over-hyped, but are we supposed to take CPD at its word?

We're in Cologne visiting with friends.  Last night on the way to dinner, we walked by a felt store and saw this.  Is it just me, or are the yellow felt stars of David grossly inappropriate?
