Today is Memorial Day. My morning email was clogged with numerous messages from retailers informing me of "Memorial Day Specials". I know you saw them too... "one day only" sales wrapped in red, white and blue graphics that will "never be offered again" telling me that I can't afford to be "left out". This is not what Memorial Day is about.
I begin this day a free man as I have every day of my life because hundreds of thousands of patriots answered a call to create and defend our Constitution and this Republic so that this world would know the blessings of freedom...freedom to worship, freedom of speech, freedom to choose one's work and dream big dreams. The free men and women of this Country have created the solutions to more challenges facing humanity than any people ever to inhabit the planet. Free Americans have offered the world cures to illnesses that have ravaged humankind, offered food and water to the desperate multitudes all across the globe following the most horrific disasters. How could it be that a nation so young as ours has innovated and achieved so much as ours? In one word: Freedom. Freedom has allowed us to explore, create, risk, try, fail and try again...there is no replacement, no alternative, and no substitute for freedom in the advancement of the human potential to achieve.
Freedom must be defended. For almost two hundred and forty years uniquely courageous men and women have answered the call to defend freedom. They have charged the enemy of freedom from frozen foxholes and foreign beaches, across flooded rice paddies and flaming desert sand. They have mastered the elements and the enemy across the seas and into the sky. In these endeavors, these epic battles waged to preserve the freedoms we enjoy came at a price. Hundreds of thousands of brave Americans paid the ultimate price for you and me and our Country. They died to defend our Constitution. They gave up their life to defend this Republic. They made their sacrifice at the altar of freedom.
So how will you spend this day...the one day of the year designated on our National calendar to commemorate "Memorial Day"? In what manner will you take in your freedom that tens of thousands of Americans have died to give you? How ever you choose to spend it I can promise you this: What's "Special" about Memorial Day won't be found at an appliance store sale. What's special about Memorial Day is not "one day only". For I know that ten's of thousands of families today are trying to press on without their brave soldier for the rest of their lives and they would trade all of their worldly goods to just have "one day only" to hug them and kiss them and tell them much they love them. The valor of a few made sure that you and I would not be "left out" of the great gift of freedom...so lets do our part to see that this Country never believes that Memorial Day is about merchandising and consumption...for if it does, the spirit to defend her is weakened and with that the blessings of freedom maybe lost...and this I tell you most assuredly, if freedom is lost it will "never be offered again".

Today in 1946, Winston Churchill stood at the lectern at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri and gave his “Iron Curtain” speech.
His famous warning, “"From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the Continent” stands out as a moment of clarity and foresight in diplomacy, where a leader who had been through so much in the previous decade refused to look away from more hard days to come, and called out evil for what it was.
Benjamin Netanyahu did so this week before Congress, describing Iran’s nuclear ambitions and the risks they pose to Israel, and the world. To me, these two speeches have more than a little in common; for Churchill, it was the prescient warning of the Communist threat to come. For Netanyahu, it was a warning with the same clarity and determination about a foe with nuclear intentions that threaten Israel, the region, and the United States.
The Churchill Centre was created to keep the memory of Winston Churchill alive. This site covers his life, including when he was Prime Minister of Great Britain during World War Two.

STATEMENT OF
FLORIDA CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER JEFF ATWATER

Over the past weeks I have received a tremendous amount of encouragement to consider a run for the United States Senate in 2016.  In response, we reached out to many friends around Florida and the country to discuss the direction in which politicians in Washington are taking our Country.

Universally, these conversations expressed deep concerns over the fiscal train-wreck of our Federal government, the lack of leadership on the world stage and the abandonment of our faithful allies, the bureaucratic stranglehold on our economy that is crushing hardworking middle class Americans, and the disgraceful assault on religious freedom.

I am most humbled that these conversations included a deep expression of confidence and urging by so many friends that we advance with a candidacy for the United States Senate.

While I have certainly taken these words of support under consideration, I will not be a candidate for U.S. Senate in 2016. I remain committed to only one endeavor and that is to be the best CFO I can be for the people of Florida.

This effort was graced with amazing support from across the State of Florida by grassroots activists, donors, and an amazing team who were on this journey with me.

As an American, and in my capacity as Florida’s CFO I will continue to fight for the foundational principles that gave birth to this country and which have proven beyond any doubt, and with apologies to none, that the United States of America is “...the last best hope on earth.”

Today kicks off the American Pie Council's National Pie Championships in Orlando! Each year the American Pie Council hosts the National Pie Championships where amateur, professional and commercial pie bakers can compete in their categories for the best pies in the country. I sure hope the pie maker from Yoder's Restaurant & Amish Village has entered, because they have the best Blueberry Crumb pie!

Great piece on why Obama's agenda keeps landing in legal hot water. Perhaps he should follow the law and the Constitution.

Protecting Floridians from becoming a victim of fraud is one of my top priorities as your CFO. We’ve cracked down on the offenders of these crimes, which have led to the arrests of over 5,000 insurance fraud criminals. This is an average of 4 fraud arrests per day.
