Part 4 in my ongoing series on gathering info from workers in the supply chain. Starting to dive into interesting ways to solicit feedback from disempowered workers in this post: www.surroundedbyobjects.com/#people-in-your-products-4
My past few blogs have been focused on how to understand the impact of the workplace and employer on an employee. I left off on the topic of power dynamics, in particular, the imbalance of power between the well-intentioned auditor and the employee who finds him/herself in the middle of an ...

My recent post on asking well-designed questions to understand the needs of the workforce in the supply chain: http://surroundedbyobjects.com/#people-in-your-products-2
Few things have the power to affect change or tap into insight like an elegant question. In the criticism I have read about corporate supply chain monitoring programs (e.g. checking supplier factories for labor abuse), I most often hear the phrase 'check-box audit'. I agree … a poorly trained ...

Lessons learned from recent pilots we conducted with customers using the conflict minerals platform we launched: http://www.surroundedbyobjects.com/#building-a-platform-part-4
This is part four of a serialized piece I've been writing about my recent experience building a software platform. I'm hoping it's the last, since the process of writing this blog has become larger and more exhausting than building the platform itself. For this last installment, I'll spend time ...

Since we're launching our conflict minerals platform, I thought I'd share some observations on the experience at Surrounded by Objects: http://www.surroundedbyobjects.com/
I'm in the midst of launching a software platform, so I thought I'd share my observations on the experience. Before I begin, I'll start with a few disclaimers: This is an extension of a pre-existing platform, so I didn't weave golden threads of code from spinnerets at the base of my spine to ...

Bold (sort of) predictions! Check out my latest post at Surrounded by Objects: http://www.surroundedbyobjects.com/#cautiously-audacious-prediction
I'm going to take a shot at an audacious prediction. In X years, the sensors surrounding us, combined with crowdsourced data, advances in computer learning and advanced analytics will be able to predict our health, wellbeing and life expectancy … based on the products we purchase and consume.

Minty Fresh Pesticides!! Seriously. I wish I were kidding. Check out my latest post at http://www.surroundedbyobjects.com/#minty-fresh-pesticides.html …
I recently glanced at the contents of the toothpaste my children were using, and was shocked and dismayed to see that it contained Triclosan, the active ingredient in most antibacterial soaps. If you're shrugging your shoulders and are numb to the amount of stuff in our stuff, let me take you ...

My most recent update on assessing workplace risk through worker dialogue. This week I'm focused on employer/employee power dynamics: http://surroundedbyobjects.com/#people-in-your-products-3
In my previous post, I began to explore the process of interviewing employees, as part of a workplace assessment. As I wrapped up, I alluded to power dynamics in the workplace, and how important it is for an auditor to have a high degree of sensitivity toward this point.

Just kicked off a series of posts about gathering info to understand worker needs in the supply chain. Enjoy! http://www.surroundedbyobjects.com/#people-in-your-products
No, this post is not about the Tidy Bowl Man, Mr. Clean, Aunt Jemima, the Kool-Aid Guy that used to bust through walls, or any of the other people ON the packages of products (Although, technically, I don't think that the Kool-Aid guy is a person. Not really sure what his deal is.) ...

If you are interested in how to establish price models for supply chain software platforms, I share my experiences at http://www.surroundedbyobjects.com#building-a-platform-part-3
I've been writing a serialized piece about my recent experience building a software platform. Unless you're one of the two people who have read the last two posts on this topic meticulously, I'll give you a quick recap on how we've gotten to this point (BTW — Thank you to both my mother and my ...

What does 'Rolling Coal' have to do with the increasing scale and complexity of product/supply chain regulation? Maybe nothing, but check out my latest post: www.surroundedbyobjects.com#out-of-control-and-rolling-coal
People say that things are getting more complex. I read it in forecasts and analyst reports, and hear it frequently from colleagues and customers in my industry. My customers design and manufacture products, and are faced with a growing menu of regulatory requirements. (Menu isn't the right word ...

How not to get harmed by the plastic fork my aunt made on her 3D printer - My latest post at Surrounded by Objects: http://www.surroundedbyobjects.com/#injecting-trust-into-distributed-manufacturing
Each of those transactions is undergirded and supported by a complicated series of regulations, backstops, and assurances that go back to the Industrial Revolution. Before that time, Americans tended to cluster in small towns and farming communities, where citizens built tight-knit relationships ...
