Her father died in WW-II. The family trekked the wilderness of N-E to reach Assam and landed in Mumbai via Kolkata (brother died there) penniless, with no food and few clothes, surviving on the generosity of the people. While her mother could get job of a nurse, she got opportunity to perform in movies like Awara (1951) as a chorus dancer when she was only 13 years old. Her big break as a dancer came in the movie Howrah Bridge when she was 19. Her performances with Asha Bhonsle numbers were very popular. Her character roles in some of the movies drew wide acclaim. She was nominated for the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award in 1965 for her role in Gumnaam. She got 'Padmashri' award in 2009.

In this 19 sec video, she says few words when she was showered with credits in a popular TV show a week back for what she accomplished. To note that she had to abandon formal education at an early age for the travesty of life!!!

A photo collage and a video link of an exemplary feat of a boy named Mariyappan who when five, met an accident on his way to school - a bus, driven by a drunk driver, went off the road and ran over his right leg, crushing it below the knee. His mother, who now sells vegetables to make a living, took out a loan of Rs. 3 lakh for his medical treatment. “Rio is my immediate goal,” Mariyappan said before leaving for the Paralympics. “After that, I want to find a good job and take care of my mother.”
