Stand Against Racism

St. Mary’s will host a “Stand Against Racism” on Friday, April 27 with a prayer service in the Chapel from 12:15 pm to approximately 12:40 pm. In addition, we will begin the day with a Daily Reflection addressing this serious issue.

This event comes as a result of the Stand Against Racism movement which was initiated by the YWCA in 2008 in order to raise awareness that racism still exists in our communities and that it can no longer be ignored or tolerated. The objective is to bring organizations together who believe that united we can eliminate racism.

In recognition of the seriousness of racism, on Friday, April 27, 2012, St. Mary’s will join with the YWCA of Evansville and other organizations, corporations, schools, hospitals, houses of worship and government agencies in the Tri-State region to make our voices heard in the ongoing plight to Stand Against Racism.

Safe Kids Sports Safety Clinics

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, visits to emergency departments for sports-related concussions and other brain injuries among children and adolescents have gone up 60 percent in the last decade. Because the brains of children and adolescents have not fully developed, they run a higher risk of Second Impact Syndrome (SIS), which is known to cause severe brain damage and even death. To help raise awareness of these and other issues, St. Mary’s, Tri-State Orthopaedics, and ProRehab will hold two Safe Kids Sports Safety Clinics.

These free events are open to coaches, parents, and other youth athletic leaders from across the Tri-State. The first clinic will be held in the St. Mary’s Amphitheatre (located on the lower level of the hospital) on April 21st from 10:00am – noon, kicking off “National Safe Kids Week.” A second clinic will be held at Tri-State Orthopaedics on May 17th from 6:00pm – 8:00pm.

Physicians and Athletic Trainers from the St. Mary’s Concussion Alliance, which includes Tri-State Orthopaedics and ProRehab, will give a presentation on the signs of a concussion, when it is safe for young athletes to return to play, and information on free baseline testing for children as young as 10 years old. They will also discuss hydration, sports safety gear, and emergency response. For more information or to register, please call 812-485-6817.

The Vanderburgh/Warrick Safe Kids Coalition was awarded a grant to host these clinics by Safe Kids USA, which is sponsored by Johnson & Johnson. Grants were awarded to those coalitions that were best able to utilize the funding to raise awareness and educate coaches, parents, and youth athletes about sports injury prevention in their community.

Breast Center Receives Recognition

St. Mary’s Breast Center has been recognized as a Certified Participant of the National Quality Measures for Breast Centers Program (NQMBC). This distinguished honor represents a commitment by our breast center to provide the highest level of care to patients in the community.

To achieve this designation, a center’s staff must not only be familiar with existing standards of care, but must also be aware of new advances in technology. St. Mary’s Breast Center has been a leader in breast health care, offering same day results, two full-time board-certified radiologists, and automated breast ultrasound screening – the latest technology for women with dense breasts.

The National Quality Measures for Breast Centers were developed by referencing the Health Care Advisory Board’s Clinical Quality Dash Board for breast centers published in the fall of 2004. The National Quality Measures for Breast Centers reflect more than five years of work, which has culminated in the adoption of more than 33 National Quality Indicators.

St. Mary's Offers Free Balance Screenings

Among the older population, falls are the leading cause of trauma admissions and injuries. A decreased sense of balance is a common risk factor for falling. To help prevent these types of injuries, free balance screenings will be offered Thursday, April 12th from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. in the Community Education Room of Washington Square Mall (located inside the back entrance of the mall under the St. Mary’s awning).

The event is presented by St. Mary’s Rehabilitation Institute, Trauma Services, PrimeWise, and St. Mary’s Medical Equipment, in partnership with Silver Sneakers, the University of Evansville Physical Therapy Department, and the YMCA.

St. Mary’s Pharmacists will also be there to help determine if medications are contributing to any loss of balance, so be sure to bring your medication list. Call 812-485-5209 to schedule an appointment.
