The museum is terrible so do not visit, it is a waste of time and I am not being cruel or unfair. When you couple this with $25 an "hour" parking you have the makings for a bad day.

As one interested in history in general and Brooklyn in particular, I was very excited at the prospect of visiting the BHS. Sadly, the experience fell far short of my expectations. The exhibits were -- how shall I say this?-- amateurish. This made slightly more sense when I noticed it as curated by local high school kids. With better professional guidance, these well-meaning would-be historians might have put together an exhibit as fascinating as the subject matter. And the same is true of the Society as a whole, as the other exhibits lacked the cogency and context of the many other historical museums I routinely visit. Sorry to be so negative. The good news is: there is plenty of room for improvement. Keep trying!

The building alone is worth a visit to BHS. It's a huge gorgeous building that you can fall in love with just by walking up the stairs. I visited for a Brooklyn Dodgers exhibit and hope to return this Winter for the Sandy photo exhibition. Terrific evergreen exhibits and you'll be fascinated to see old Brooklyn. If planning a trip, be sure to confirm the library's hours because you'll get lost in there and won't want to miss the stacks of Brooklyn books. They have fantastic exhibits and are always working with local businesses to bring interesting content and ideas to the plate (like summer evenings with Brooklyn Brewery).
