A good man and a great photographer has moved on. Au revoir, mon ami.
It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our dear friend Christophe Agou after a long and gallant struggle with cancer. He was 46. Amidst our sorrow, we may take some small comfort: He has left us the indelible, brilliant legacy of his photographs. We shall miss his great heart, ...

So who is this Bram guy, anyway? Where did he come from? What's his approach? In Tbilisi last month I was interviewed by Dina Oganova for the KOLGA TBILISI PHOTO FESTIVAL and the answers are within: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9oaTpXS0q0

This thoughtful article by Melissa Smyth sums up much of why I can't abide the whole "Humans of New York" thing. http://www.warscapes.com/opinion/sentimentality-critique-humans-new-york …
“Sentimentality, the ostentatious parading of excessive and spurious emotion, is the mark of dishonesty, the inability to feel; the wet eyes of the sentimentalist betray his aversion to experience, his fear of life, his arid heart; and it is always, therefore, the signal of secret and violent inhumanity, the mask of cruelty.”                                              -James Baldwin, Notes of a Native Son

Breughel should be mandatory study for photographers. You'll learn more about handling large groups of people in a rectangle from him than anyone else. Thanks, Andy Adams, for posting this painting.

Apropos of the World Press Photo Award controversy, the voice of a brilliant photojournalist from a different era:
http://lens.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/01/03/w-eugene-smith-i-didnt-write-the-rules-why-should-i-follow-them/?smid=fb-share&_r=0
In a newly rediscovered interview from the 1950s, W. Eugene Smith discussed a then-controversial and now taboo practice in documentary photography: the staging of photographs.

(I'm on p. 4) It's the LENSCRATCH annual Ginormous 7 part post: The 2014 YOUR Favorite Photographs Exhibition http://lenscratch.com/2015/01/the-2014-favorite-photo-of-the-year-exhibition/ …
Today marks a new year, new possibilities and thoughts of resolutions, hope for better behaviors, and goals to be met.  But today also allows us a chance to look back at the favorite photograph YOU took in 2014.  We know it was a hard decision, as for most people, it's the most recent photograph you've…

I'm pleased to be in very good company in Aline Smithson's LENSCRATCH "Snow" exhibition - for those of you in sunnier climes: http://lenscratch.com/2014/12/the-2014-snow-exh
I live in Los Angeles, where about the closest thing we have to winter weather is a rain storm, so selfishly, I though it would be wonderful to have a White Christmas, even if it is only online.  Thank you for your wonderful images that make me wish I was somewhere else and thank you…
