Amazing illustration of modern-day segregation in Chicago. Austin isn't nearly as segregated, though I-35 seems to separate whites from others: http://www.flickr.com/photos/walkingsf/5560474714/ (this Flickr stream has maps for a bunch of US cities).

Google fail: I had to download Google Drive for PC in Internet Explorer, because it wouldn't download in Chrome.

Who knew blood pressure varied seasonally? And why don't we seasonally vary the normal range to account for this (we've only had 30 years since this paper came out)? Anyway, it perfectly explains some of the funky seasonality that was going on in my health care quality data (but not the funky seasonality that seems to have been caused by pay-for-performance, which is good for my dissertation).
Blood pressure measurements recorded during the medical Research Council's treatment trial for mild hypertension have been analysed according to the calendar month in which the readings were made....

Yeah, a nice project for a pre-med undergrad thesis. A great thesis would bring in weather data and explore that connection further. Sadly, I won't have any undergrads, and it's not really a project for an MPA student. (So feel free to pass this along to an undergrad you know...I'd love to see the results, though.)

Texas beats Harvard to make the Final 4. Go Longhorns!

"In our academic bracket, winners are determined based on each team's multiyear Academic Progress Rate, which the NCAA uses to measure classroom performance. In the event of a tie, we turn to the NCAA's Graduation Success Rate, which measures the proportion of athletes who graduate within six years."

Terrible story. How can you do a piece on gas taxes and not mention the word "externality"? Pigou. Pigou. Pigou.
The Congressional Budget Office says the White House plan to raise fuel efficiency could mean more potholes, or higher gas prices.

When I didn't study for exams, I wasn't lazy. I was just aware that exams didn't represent authentic learning. Yeah.
But seriously, this is worth reading if you're a teacher/prof.

An article I'll need to grapple with some more once the dissertation is done.

Cool article Sam. Maybe a place social conservatives and fiscal liberals can come to agreement...all be it for different reasons.

WaPo seems to have forgotten that people die in car accidents: "Also, the gas tax is set too low to offset the negative side effects for society — economists call them 'externalities' — associated with gasoline consumption. Those costs include traffic, air pollution, wear and tear on roads, climate change, and dependency on unstable sources of foreign oil."
Why advisers to Obama and Romney both like higher gas taxes.
