TLRD: Should I build a Text Based RPG based on D&D with a Google Maps style map showing from the entire continent, or zoom down to a single town then building within that town?

Hey all, I would really like some input on an idea I have. I recently began running a Play by Post D&D Campaign and it got me thinking, I would love to build a Browser Based, Mobile Friendly, Text RPG which revolves around a Google Map Style system.

Start with a full view of the continent, then zoom in to see individual towns, roads, zoom inside of buildings. Basically a "battle map" the size of a continent that's zoomable.

Picture the Faerun Map, then imagine you could zoom  into a specific Tavern and see a Token for the Inn Keeper there. You could then interact (as a Text Based RPG) with the Inn Keeper, or anyone else inside that Inn. Or walk outside and interact with people in the town.

I guess it would feel like old school Zelda with better "graphics" and without the live action component (you would not see combat).

The biggest component: The entire world would be interactive and changeable. If you kill said innkeeper above, he's dead and that's the end of it. If a group of PCs were searching for his Daughter and needed more information from him, they would come back and see him gone. No more reward. But maybe they decide to hunt down his killer...

Ideally each NPC could be "played" by a real person, but until the community grew they would have to have "prescribed scripts."

I figured this would be an awesome system for groups to play together without a DM, on their phones, when they could, text based RPG.

Traveling along the road? Random encounters could be traveling gypsies you could talk to, share a meal with and maybe never see again. Or maybe you encounter them again.

As you leave the game your character is "dormant" but you could set "dormant activities" like whittling scrimshaw, practicing sword formes. Brewing potions.

Is there an open space of land? Maybe you could build a castle there when you've saved up. Don't picture Minecraft style building, but you hire NPCs, submit drawings and floorplans of the structure, and people could visit (or be prohibited from visiting).

Thoughts?

+Stone Montgomery  Great video! Thank you! I was also looking at a Ramsey Winch motor but everyone keeps telling me it will burn up with continuous use. Do you believe that is wrong?

How has this held up over time? Have you power washed the driveway since you put the paint on? Does it hold up?

This has got to be the most insane achievement (beside getting 25 on a follow the leader). Getting all of the circumstances to line up is almost impossible...

Ok that's cool. Let's set up a hangout to discuss. I'm free during most weekdays and Sunday evenings. Would that work for you?

Howdy. I just joined after finding the group website when searching for information about Professional Dungeon Mastering. I've been playing since AD&D. I became obsessed with D&D after being disenfranchised with the limitations of video games. I've stuck with Pathfinder and 3.0/3.5 and haven't continued with newer versions. I'm really interested in finding some motivated players who would make a monetary investment for a custom and exciting campaign. I haven't gotten to play much at all in recent years, so I really miss the world building, story development and just the random turn of the die. :-)

You're very welcome here, my friend.  We are all hopeful that we can help to bring a higher level of play into focus and turn the game from mere hobby into a true craft.  Yyes, for some it already is, but we do mean a money making one... yes, for some it already is, but that's a vanishing few ... we want to expand the domain and help to usher in an era of 21st Century RPG as Art Form... well, that's my thing, anyway.  I totally believe in this, and want to help make it happen.  Glad you are here to join us.  Right now things are catch as catch can, as we individually try to make progress in this direction and report back.  At some point we may achieve enough successes to promote the idea more generally.  For now, we kind of more like a mutual support society, encouraging each other to try this and try that, and see what works.   We've amassed in the meantime a pretty decent library in our Files section, so please go ahead and take a gander there.  As for me I've got two angles.  One, I'm developing the Elthos RPG & Mythos Machine web application that supports the Elthos rules with a comprehensive GM Prep Utility.   I'm also trying to establish a local Professional GM gig with the community centers here.   I've made some contacts and proposals and am waiting for things to jostle into place.   So... carry on, send in your thoughts and ideas, try stuff on your own and don't forget about us when you get rich and famous!  :)

+dinny7777 Can you elaborate on how to wire the battery to the accelerator to the drive motor? I want to build my son a similar kart and need more details on wiring. Can I simply run a Power wire to an on/off button then to the motor so when he presses the pedal, the on/off button is pressed, turning power on to the motor, and when released kills power? Is it that simple?

GP did an awesome job both fixing my garage door opener and helping me program the outside keypad. Their technician was incredibly knowledgeable and professional! I will definitely be using them again.
