Interesting read: "My Year of MOOCs: Lessons learned from earning the equivalent of a B.A. in 12 months, online" http://ow.ly/tIsOv

“But society as a whole will benefit enormously. The store of human capital will  be more broadly and accurately represented by credentials that are useful in a  mobile, interconnected world. Separating the credentialing and teaching  functions of higher education allows organizations to specialize in one or the  other.”

In an earlier post, I announced that I was going to write a textbook for open publishing and track my progress through a series of blog posts. In this one I examine my initial thinking. Deciding to go for open rather than commercial publishing was not an easy decision, and I am still open to changing my mind if I run into too many problems. But here are the pros and cons that influenced my decision.

Building African education capacity through openness
Introduction
OER Africa is an innovative initiative established by the South African Institute for Distance Education (Saide) to play a leading role in driving the development and use of Open Educational Resources (OER) across all education sectors on the African continent.

OER Africa provides you access to information you will need to learn about and benefit from Open Educational Resources (OER). If you are just discovering OER, we provide an excellent starting point for finding OER, learning about the benefits of sharing. We currently focus on the supporting and developing OER in these thematic areas: agriculture, health education, foundation courses and teacher education.
