Where body size and proportions are concerned, I don't think 12-inch tall people are the weirdest thing on this cover.

Time for the Ape of the Day!

Fun fact: Morgar resented the quotation marks and sued STARTLING DETECTIVE ADVENTURES in a landmark libel case.

Happy birthday to Colin Clive, born on this day in 1900!

Probably still the gold standard for Dr. Frankenstein portrayers, although at the very least, Peter Cushing gave him a run for his money.

Remember, kids, if the government shuts down, it means everything's like THE PURGE. Get out there and unleash the real you.

Happy birthday to making fun of Nazis, in Hollywood movies, anyway! YOU NAZTY SPY!, a short by the Three Stooges, was the first to do so and debuted on this day in 1940. (Charlie Chaplin’s THE GREAT DICTATOR came out on October 15, 1940.)

Though I try to take it easy on political posts, I’m willing to go on the record that ridiculing Nazis is still a good idea.

Time for the Ape of the Day!

Fun fact: With every day that passed, it became more and more awkward for Buddy to tell Skorgor and Kronga that he DIDN’T belong to the dominant species on Planet Earth.

Happy birthday to C. M. Eddy Jr., born on this day in 1896!

Who says old-school pulp horror fiction has nothing to do with the lives and concerns of everyday people? I mean, if I had a nickel for every time I’ve thought something like this:

“Before dawn they will take me to a black cell where I shall languish interminably, while insatiable desires gnaw at my vitals and wither up my heart, till at last I become one with the dead that I love.”

Time for the Ape of the Day!

Fun fact: Many simians who listened to Grodd’s TED Talk came away persuaded that condescension is the mightiest superpower of all.

Happy birthday to five minutes to midnight! On this day in 2007, the members of the BULLETIN OF THE ATOMIC SCIENTISTS set the Doomsday Clock to that time in response to North Korean nuclear testing.

In absolute terms, five to midnight sounds kind of bad. But the Clock currently stands at two and half minutes to midnight, so, relatively speaking, nuclear annihilation-wise, 2007 was the good old days.

Don’t worry, though. As Bert the Turtle taught me in elementary school many years ago, you’ll be fine if you simply duck and cover.
